With a new manager comes a gigantic reset sign for the existing squad. This is never more the case right now at Ibrox with new boss Derek McInnes long since settled at Auchenhowie.
McInnes has to run the rule over the current squad. And it’s abundantly clear that all bets are off over which players he will pick aside his own signings.
It’s a huge reboot at Ibrox. One that even the most unwanted players under ex-manager Danny Rohl now get a chance to impress and stake a claim.
Everyone gets the tabula rasa.
And that’s where Ryan Naderi comes in.
Ibrox Noise has never rated the German, but it’s clear he is both a good human being and a hard worker. He also scored a boatload in the Bundesliga 3.
In all honestly, the Scottish Premiership, outside the (now) top 3, is probably equivalent to that kind of level. Let’s not kid on Kilmarnock and Dundee are much better than Hansa Rostock.
As such, it’s been the weight of Rangers’ shirt that has been hefty for the striker, and he was quite frankly dire.
He looked every inch a third division German striker who had been bought for way too much. £5M on this guy was a bizarre gamble, and the epitome of the horrendous Danny Rohl era. Naderi was a Rohl signing and summed him up.
But with McInnes in charge, Naderi gets a second chance. 6 goals and assists in 11 are genuinely good numbers, even if only one of them was a league goal.
After a horrible start, he started looking a little more like it, but he was still well off the level needed.
A preseason under Derek McInnes and if Naderi isn’t going to succeed at Ibrox now, he never will.
This is why the reset matters.
Players like Naderi get to try again under the proper circumstances.
Rather than all the EFL mercenary rubbish previous managers filled Rangers up with, Del is going for what is actually best for the club. Not their own personal favours and favourites.
While McInnes knows McCrorie from Aberdeen, both are Rangers men and McInnes trusts him. He knows he’s good for the club. That’s why he signed him.
And if McInnes sees something in the German hitman too, maybe just maybe we’ll finally learn why he did so well at Hansa.
Naderi, like many others, gets a chance under this boss to prove he’s worthy of the shirt.
Here’s hoping he takes it.
