There are clearly many great things about Danny Rohl leaving Rangers. The fact that the EFL slop manager has gone off to ruin some other club is music to Ibrox Noise’s ears. We are absolutely thrilled to see the back of him. However, there are many, many bonuses to his departure, and while we could rattle through each of them in this entry, we will focus in on one in particular. And that is the end of EFL slop.
Yes, the trashy EFL slop rubbish that Rangers were constantly being linked to under his management. Indeed, that applied under Russell Martin as well, with the number of absolute nonsense League One and Championship level players that Rangers kept on being linked with, with having that level of manager in the boardroom.
A Different Market Under McInnes
Conceivably, Rangers, under Derek McInnes, who has a distinctly different market that he will aim at, will not be linked with the likes of Pierce Charles and Dan Neil. Rangers will not anticipate signing the kind of players that Danny Rohl would have been wanting as Rangers manager. Obviously, any manager wants to sign Lionel Messi and Erling Haaland, but that is not practical. They tend instead to go with the markets that they know. And in Rohl’s case, that is Championship and League One. It is essentially slop level, levels that are way below what Rangers need.
The January Window Evidence
This only has to be evidenced by this simple fact from January. That although Rangers did not sign any EFL slop players, the level of player who came in was absolutely atrocious. Ryan Naderi, anyone? So now, with a new manager, there is a distinct change in the calibre of player being linked. Lewis Ferguson is a potential possibility. Billy Gilmour too. And obviously, Lawrence Shankland has already come in. Rangers’ calibre of targeting will clearly change with the arrival of Derek McInnes. The club will take much more seriously the calibre of player that wants to come in, that the club wants to get. And the idea of EFL slop will hopefully become something but a distant memory.
Too Much Lower League Recruitment
For window after window after window, Rangers feel like they have been linked with nothing but lower league English rubbish that is either mid table Championship, upper League One, or completely unwanted chaff from the Premier League. Indeed, it seems okay when a player has the Premier League as his CV, but when that player is discarded by that club, it really does not matter. Look at Max Aarons. While a Premier League player in origin, he was a fail. He had gone out on loan to various clubs and had not done well, and struggled badly at Valencia. There are other players too who were on loan at other clubs and had not done great, and Rangers ended up with far too many players of that calibre.
Moving On From the Rohl Era
You only have to look at Thelo Aasgaard. That obviously, in that case, was not Danny Rohl’s fault, but he was not looking at much better. As we mentioned, Ryan Naderi was an absolutely atrocious signing. And while Chukwuani did look on paper to be a decent signing, in reality he was absolutely dreadful. So, at the end of the day, the likes of Pierce Charles and other EFL slop players, for example everything else that seemed to come from Sheffield Wednesday, will hopefully now see an end.
When on earth were Sheffield Wednesday rejects good enough for Rangers? They never were, and we never should have signed Djeidi Gassama, to say the least. But Rohl is gone, Martin is long gone and Thelwell is long gone. Hopefully now Rangers will start to bring in the calibre of player that this club deserves.
