It was very clear there was no need to retire the number 2 jersey after James Tavernier’s exit. There has been a few comments made about Ross McCrorie indeed inheriting that number, and the club made quite a big deal of that development.
The number 2 shirt has been a huge deal for Rangers the past 11 years, with Tavernier having custody of that number and making it his own.
With McCrorie now in possession of that one, does that mean he’s Rangers’ new right back?
Of course, McCrorie has played some of his career there, being the versatility man that he is. But primarily his strongest slot is indeed defensive midfield and that’s been his majority position.

But at Bristol it wasn’t – central mid, right back and even LM. He really was quite the flexible one.
The reality is McInnes has brought him back for his sheer versatility. He might have Tav’s number but he is by no means his successor.
Under McInnes McCrorie played a bunch of different positions, and it’ll be the same at Ibrox.
The fact he has Tav’s number has no implications to where he’ll play.
Ibrox Noise’s view is his strongest position is still defensive midfield. He’s fairly quick, certainly strong, and he’s a big lad. He is not afraid to be a bit of a bruiser.

We’re not quite sure he’s at the level of Brown and McGregor over the city, but he’s only 28 and maybe this is his time to define exactly the player he is.
McCrorie never wanted to leave, he’s a Ger through and through.
And just like Lawrence Shankland, he’ll find his best form at Rangers, the club he wants to be at.
But don’t even try to guess what position he’ll play…
