In case there was any doubt about this particular situation, Rangers will not be taking up any attempt to try to sign Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Nasser Djiga. The Burkina Faso international had a bright spell in Scotland, initially a little slow to get to grips with the diabolical management around him. But “no deal” for defender.
Strong Finish But No Deal
Djiga had a strong second half of the season. He looked very much fitting with the Rangers shirt and offered many solid defensive moments. He proved quite significantly his ability over the remaining portion of the campaign.
However, there were two gigantic sticking blocks to making the deal permanent. That, of course, was the salary, which was set to be around £75,000 a week, and naturally the fee of around £10M.
Wolves were not shifting on this fee, given that is what they paid Red Star Belgrade for his services.
Financial Barriers Too Great
Furthermore, the salary, of course, is completely beyond what Rangers are willing to offer. Djiga would have been a £20,000 a week player.
There is no sense that Rangers would have paid much more than that because, while he was solid in the second half of the season, we would not say much more.
He was good. That is about the limit.
You cannot pay £10M or more than £20,000 a week for a player of Djiga’s talents, which are decent but not breathtaking.
Consequently, there is no chance whatsoever that Djiga will be returning to Rangers, and that relationship is completely over.
Other Loan Players Also Gone
He is not the only loanee who went back to their club, and there will be no prospect of bringing them back, even on a loan.
Those would be Max Aarons, Jayden Meghoma and one or two others.
We do understand, of course, that there is room for negotiation regarding Mikey Moore, but that depends on Spurs and Roberto De Zerbi’s appraisal of the winger. But “no deal” for defender Djiga.
No Rangers Return Planned
But as far as Djiga goes, that one is completely finished.
We do understand that it is more likely that he will, in actual fact, return to Serbia if they can manufacture a deal for him.
But he will not be coming back to Rangers.
