There has been a little bit of debate about the actual terms of Lawrence Shankland’s transfer from Hearts to Rangers. As is widely known, Shankland was indeed under contract at Hearts and had signed a three year deal in the summer of 2025. Ibrox Noise has explained the long play that Shankland engaged in when he agreed to those terms. He included a clause that specifically addressed Rangers in the event of the Ibrox side making a move for him.
The Release Clause
There was indeed a release clause, and we can finally reveal definitively what Lawrence Shankland cost Rangers. The release clause was indeed free as confirmed by sources close to Ibrox. In order to secure his services for a minimum of one year and potentially more, Hearts agreed that in the event of Rangers making a move on Shankland, he would be released for free.
He would have that one move for absolutely nothing. He was, quite simply, a free transfer.
This is a very rare thing to see when it comes to what initially appears to be a multi year contract. Certain players can be canny enough to have installed clauses which give them freedom of exit, as in free agency, under certain circumstances.
Shankland has proven, along with his agent, to be a very, very smart operator who got the move of his dreams. Let us not forget the wage of his dreams as well. He achieved all of this for no cost to Rangers whatsoever.
His value may not be super high these days, given his age. However, his stats and goals and assists are outstanding, and he is only now hitting his peak.
To get a player of this calibre, who will bleed blue for the cause, for absolutely no price at all, is an outstanding piece of business.
A Rare Contract Situation
Yes, this was a free transfer. It is a very rare thing to see when a player signs a multi year contract with a club.
It is very rare that they are smart enough to include a clause that allows them freedom of departure in the event of specific circumstances.
We must remember the specific clause here. Shankland knew that Rangers would potentially be interested in him. He knew there was a strong chance they would want him.
Of course, where Hearts were concerned, Shankland held all the cards. He was able to have that clause installed because Hearts wanted to keep him so much that even one extra year of his being contracted to Tynecastle was a good deal for Hearts.
They knew his ‘heart’ was not with them any longer. Nevertheless, he would be professionally committed enough to deliver his best, or at least something close to it, for at least another year.
As we say, Shankland held every card here and was able to engineer that clause because he had all the bargaining chips at his end. Hearts did not have any.
Hearts Had No Leverage
Indeed, they more than doubled his existing wage to secure him for at least that one extra year.
His contract prior to this was £3,000 a week. He had that boosted to £7,000 a week, which is still peanuts for his abilities, but better than before.
Of course, Rangers coming in changed everything. We understand his salary is closer to £25,000 per week.
Consequently, he has secured the salary that finally sets him up for the rest of his life. In addition, he gets to play for the dream club that he has always wanted to represent from his childhood.
Smart Business All Round
This was a smart, canny operation by Shankland to get the free transfer in the middle of his contract.
Very well played indeed.
