Ibrox Noise can confirm that Rangers are definitively interested in Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson. Rangers face competition, but it is significant competition in the form of both recently-relegated Wolves, and Premier League candidates, Wrexham. Both sides facing Rangers in the contest for Patterson’s signature can offer him potential Premier League football next season. Naturally, both are hugely in the hunt to come up to England’s top flight. Rangers face significant pressure in the bid to make Patterson Rangers’ new number one.
Patterson Faces Strong Competition
Naturally, of course, this means attention turns to Jack Butland and his position in goal. He won Rangers Players’ Player of the Year, and many rated him highly. But he also came in for a significant amount of criticism due to some high profile gaffes.
He is definitely not regarded as quite the untouchable goalkeeper and hero that he once was. We have not been hearing too much of Super Jack Butland in goals in recent months. His position at Rangers is not exactly cut and dried. Jack Butland under threat.
He is as expendable as anybody else. If a better option comes up, he is entirely surplus, or at least potentially a deputy. Jack Butland would not be one to be a deputy at Rangers. He has been linked with a move to Premier League side Nottingham Forest.
Questions Over Butland’s Future
However, the attention, of course, is naturally on Sunderland’s Patterson. The problem, of course, here is that Patterson has zero Premier League appearances and is in no way a Premier League player. Even so, Jack Butland under threat now.
Aged 26, his entire career has been lower league. Indeed Sunderland loaned him out at the first chance they got after promotion. Just like club colleague Dan Neil.
Dan Neil is another that Ibrox Noise is monitoring, and has at best misgivings about the potential of Rangers to sign him.
Concerns About Patterson
Ibrox Noise will have information regarding both of these players in due course, but for now we can definitely confirm that Rangers are interested in Patterson, although Ibrox Noise does not share the desire to bring him to Govan.
This is a player who is a Championship EFL slop player, and definitely not strong enough for what Rangers need going forward.
We would be against him, even if he does have a supposed value of £8M.
At the present moment, we are better off with Jack Butland.
