Ibrox Noise is uncertain if we even want to entertain this story. Especially given it comes from serial fantasist Fraser Fletcher of TeamTalk. However, that story has been in circulation for some considerable time. And that is the interest in Emmanuel Fernandez, allegedly from Bayer Leverkusen. Fantasy Story or are Rangers about to make a killing?
The Rangers defender signed from Peterborough for a significant sum of £3M, having been worth only £300K at the time. It was a bizarre addition, which for many months looked indeed like a farce appointment. Particularly with diabolical performances from the English-born Nigeria international.
How Fernandez Turned Things Around
However, the arrival of Scott Fry, a set piece specialist, nailed him a few goals. This turned him into some kind of mass cult hero who suddenly became the ghost of Paolo Maldini.
Of course, in reality, he was an absolutely diabolical defender. Most of his high ratings are a result of attacking moments and goals that he scored at the other end. Just like James Tavernier, of course.
But this, of course, is irrelevant. We have checked many times over the stats for his defensive contributions and they are extremely average. Yet that is not the impression that the bigger clubs seem to have gotten.
Interest From Germany
Borussia Dortmund, of course, were credited with interest in him as well. Barry Fry was very keen to point out that this boy could be sold for £40M.
We cannot see that level of number coming in for him at all. He just is not anywhere near that good. But Rangers could be in line to make a profit from him if any European club is indeed interested in his signature.
We are just not sure that Bayer Leverkusen are one of them. We might be wrong. It has been known to happen.
A Potential Rangers Windfall
But if we can sell Fernandez and get big money for him, it would be an outstanding achievement. If Rangers can get something like the £20M that Transfermarkt values him at, then that is an outstanding piece of business and we would applaud the club for such a shrewd piece of work.
Of course, there is the slight catch of a sell on clause. Fry is very keen for Rangers to sell Fernandez for big money because he wants the big chunk of cash at Peterborough. Fantasy Story or are Rangers about help him?
The Sell On Clause Catch
It is unknown what the sell on clause is, but just like Igamane, it will take a fair chunk of the cash from a sale away from Rangers. That is an unfortunate side effect, but at the same time, getting a massive amount of money for Fernandez from any club would be an outstanding piece of work to get done this business.
We will see if that bears fruit.
