Yesterday’s news of Danny Rohl and his impending exit to Red Bull Salzburg came rather out of the blue for Rangers fans.
The story was originally broken by Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg. It then made its way into the mainstream press, with all forms of Sky News taking up the story alongside all press in the UK.
The story is absolutely real, and Red Bull Salzburg do indeed want Rangers head coach as their number one. The question then becomes, does he want to leave? Does he want the job?
The answer is yes.
Rohl Wants Germany Return
Danny Rohl has wanted back to Germany for quite some considerable time, but has not had the opportunity to do so.
He is away from his family and has stated categorically that that distance has been a problem that he has had to sacrifice.
Consequently, he has only seen his family briefly around five times a year ever since he left his home shores for England, then, of course, Scotland.
Consequently, the move back close to home would suit him down to the ground.
But he is being professional for now in public by stating that he is happy and prepared for the new season.
Discussions Have Taken Place
But we do know that discussions have taken place between Salzburg and Rangers, and those discussions would only take place if Rohl consented to it.
Salzburg want Rohl as their new coach, and Rangers are happy to let him go.
The Compensation Factor
Rangers are happy to let him go because Rangers will receive an alleged £6.5M in compensation.
This money could compensate for an awful lot of the lost cash that Rangers have had over the years, not least the one that Ibrox Noise mentioned recently in Ben Davies.
He has essentially lost Rangers around £8M.
The £6.5M for Rohl would be very handy indeed.
It would give everybody what they want.
Rohl gets back close to home and a solid job at a high level, while Rangers finally move on from this EFL slop era and bring in someone decent.
What Happens Next?
Of course, the question then becomes who?
And we have a fair few candidates and suggestions on that front.
But for now, Rohl does look inevitably like he will be leaving Rangers this summer.
Many fans suspected it, and it is indeed appearing to come to pass.
