Another couple of Scotland players who are in the significant shop window could be Napoli’s pair of Scott McTominay and Billy Gilmour.
Scott McTominay’s Big Opportunity
Scott McTominay is certainly in the shop window and would be seeking to get the big move. Again, from Napoli, there is a lot of hype about the English based Scotsman who has shone outstandingly for the Neopolitans.
He is without any doubt one of the big assets of the Scotland national side, even though, in reality, he is not actually Scottish. But he is an exceptional talent, with his market value said to be in the region of around £35M to £40M, if not more.
In all honesty, in this day and age, he is probably worth even more. Nevertheless, despite all his Player of the Year awards and the fact that he has absolutely sparkled in Serie A, £40M, according to Transfermarkt, is what McTominay’s market value is. However, at 29 that value may rather depreciate.
The Billy Gilmour Story
However, of more importance is the tragic Billy Gilmour, set to miss the World Cup sadly through an absolutely diabolical injury during a friendly. Could Rangers finally bring peace to him after this?
Nevertheless, he is another one that Rangers lost. He left Rangers, of course, all those years ago because he had no pathway to the first team. That is why he left.
Mark Warburton was not giving kids a chance and he realised if he wanted to play football, he would have to move elsewhere. Chelsea saw that chance and took it.
This left a lot of division among Rangers fans who were heartbroken losing a talented player at such a young age. But the reasons were pretty obvious and entirely justified.
Alas, those problems are still there today. Look at Findlay Curtis. He had to leave Rangers to go to Kilmarnock to prove he was actually worth anything.
And he has done so. He has done that and he will come back to Rangers, assuming Danny Rohl is actually interested whatsoever in playing him.
A Rangers Return?
However, in keeping with Rangers’ desire to bring in Scots and indeed Rangers men, would Billy Gilmour not be another fantastic acquisition?
He, of course, has not shone or stood out quite at Napoli in the way that McTominay has, and there is definitely scope for a deal to be done there if Rangers want to invest.
Billy Gilmour’s market value is lower than McTominay’s by a considerable amount. He is also considerably younger.
He has an immense amount of talent but has had some issues with injuries. There is no question that Gilmour is another one, like Shankland, who has shone throughout his career.
He has shown plenty of glimpses of what he can do, but Rangers is where he wants to be.
Of course, he moved away and many fans would argue at the point that he does not want to be at Rangers. But playing for Rangers is what every Rangers fan wants to do.
Even although at a young age he left, it was because he was not going to get the chance to do so. Now, of course, he would.
Dreamland for Rangers Fans
The notion of a Rangers side with Lawrence Shankland up front and Lewis Ferguson and Billy Gilmour in midfield would be absolute dreamland for Rangers fans.
Of course, it is not easy and that would cost an awful lot of cash. And we will end up with some unknown punter from the Danish third division.
But in theory, Ferguson for one is definitely in the shop window.
Particularly Ferguson stands out as a contender to get a new team. And if Rangers can get him and get Gilmour too, that would be a quite staggering window this summer.
The one that would be more likely is Gilmour based on the price. He could be a fair chunk below £10M. And with no World Cup shop window, his price won’t boost. If there was a desire and there was want and there is will on all sides, then things could be done. So could Rangers finally bring Billy Gilmour back?
It, of course, depends on Rangers actually sticking to the Scottish Rangers philosophy that they appear to have started with Shankland.
