Despite the developments of the James Tavernier story as player coach at Ibrox, Ibrox Noise nevertheless put it to a poll. We asked Rangers fans what they felt about the potential of Tavernier coming back in that role. We weren’t that surprised by the answer. As you will see from the graph below, opinion was fairly solid in favour of him coming back as player coach. 61% said yes. This was pretty strong support for James Tavernier in that capacity. It tells you just how much popularity and support James Tavernier still has at Ibrox.
Support remains strong
Fans are thrilled with the new regime. Fans are happy with Derek McInnes and the way things are going at Rangers. They’re happy with who’s leaving and who’s coming in. It does look so much more ‘Rangersy’. However, there is still a massive pining for Tavernier given how it ended. He has a great deal of support among the fans, who, for the majority, would like to see him back in Govan.
The Ibrox Noise view
As you may have guessed, Ibrox Noise is not one of those groups. We, as a group, do not want to see James Tavernier in any capacity back at the club, aside perhaps from an ambassadorial one. We would much rather he continues his playing days elsewhere and leaves us alone. The story did, however, stir the hive. It is a hot topic. He is, and will always be, a bit of a divisive individual, up there with Josh Windass in all fairness.
The final verdict
But at the end of the day, the story is, of course, apparently not happening. Not to say that it is fiction, but it is not happening. Tavernier, whether or not the idea was discussed internally at Govan, will not be coming back as a player coach. Those who were against the idea can be thoroughly relieved about that. But they were only a minority, going by our numbers. Very interesting stats indeed that Rangers fans still hold a massive candle for the former captain. And that’s the way it goes.
