£12M and counting – one man is draining Rangers’ coffers

0

Rangers have a significant problem in terms of being lumbered with one player who the club just cannot shift. Having spent last season on loan at NEC, Danilo has returned to Govan. He has been speaking up the notion of going back home to Brazil. But none of this matters because they need the budget. His target club would be childhood Corinthians, but they would need the budget to be able to sign him. They would need to be able to afford his £40,000pw wages. Plus they must satisfy Rangers especially in a potential mutual consent.

The Cost Of Danilo

The problem is that Danilo has cost Rangers probably the highest level of cash any player ever has in Govan. At £40,000 a week, he is one of the highest earners in the history of the club, if not the highest. The upfront fee, of course, was £6M. Now add all this together and so far, in terms of the 3 years that he has been at Rangers, he has cost Rangers well over £12M and counting. Every week he is at Rangers costs another £40,000. If ever a player was a drain on resources and had given absolutely nothing back to the club apart from a bit of patter with his Da’, it would be Danilo.

A Huge Drain On Resources

We do not think he is a bad guy by any means. But he does symbolise the word parasite or the word waster. He has offered so little and he has not delivered on value for money at all. Of course, that is not exactly his fault. It was an under-pressure Michael Beale who made some diabolical decisions, having no recruitment to support him at the time. He personally negotiated that one and paid the £6M to Feyenoord. They were not absolutely delighted to see him go. But they were not gutted and they were quite happy to get the cash for him. They knew he needed to be replaced. Little did Rangers know just how little Danilo would contribute towards the Ibrox cause.

Rangers Need A Solution

Danilo has been the biggest waste of money in Rangers history. We have no qualms about saying that. Far worse than Tore Andre Flo, who did at least score a decent amount of goals despite the exorbitant transfer fee. There are other wastes of money as well, but we do not even include Youssef Chermiti in this. He has cost £11M but at least scored around 20 goals and assists in his debut season, even if they were not necessarily the most important. He was certainly never injured and he did work hard. Few would deny that.

But Danilo has just been an absolute drain on the Govan coffers. The fact that Rangers are struggling to shift him is still a huge problem. A lot of the transfer activity going forward does depend to an extent on getting him off the books. We cannot seem to find a club that is willing to take him away. And consequently, the problem continues with having him on the payroll. There is only so much you can do in terms of bringing in new players before you have to get rid of existing ones, and he very much qualifies as that. We do not know what on earth the club is going to do regarding Danilo, but we really need an offer to come in soon because otherwise he is just going to continue to drain our resources.
