Ibrox Noise was slightly amused to see a very, very big disparity between three media sources, all of whom have links to Rangers. In terms of the story in question, it centres around Scotland and Rangers goalkeeper Liam Kelly. The lad has been a backup goalkeeper for both of these teams for the majority of his career, albeit he managed to be a moderately successful mid SPL level goalkeeper in between all of this. Nevertheless, Kelly does have caps for his national side. He is an established Scotland backup keeper, albeit he has never generally been first choice for the national side. Meanwhile Romano drops contract bombshell.
Barry Ferguson’s Original Claim
However, the issue of concern comes regarding his contract and the state of play with his Rangers future. The first story regarding Liam Kelly’s position was actually broken around four or five months ago, if not more, by former interim coach Barry Ferguson. He let slip on his radio channel that Kelly had in fact already signed a new deal. At least, he seemed to think that the lad had. It was not totally clear. It made a bit of a wave and a lot of outlets reported based on this.
Now, of course, Ferguson was interim manager, so he might have actually known the state of play here. He may have known whether or not Kelly had indeed signed a new deal.
Daily Record’s Contradiction
However, since then, over the last 24 hours, we have heard another three completely contrasting reports about the state of play. The first one comes from our old friends at the Daily Record. We have, of course, been discussing Keith Jackson and his knowledge regarding Rangers’ takeover.
Coming from the Daily Record, albeit we are not sure of the journalist behind this, they claim that Liam Kelly will be leaving Rangers this summer. They state that it’s over, and he will not be offered a new contract.
This, of course, contrasts with what Barry Ferguson said, that Kelly had already signed a new deal end of.
Chris Jack Offers Another Version
However, Chris Jack of the Evening Times and/or Rangers Review has come out with an exact contradiction. He claims that discussions are ongoing between Rangers and Kelly regarding a new contract, and that they are apparently scheduled to continue during the summer over the World Cup. The final outcome will reportedly be reached after Scotland’s fate is decided at this summer’s showpiece event.
Then there’s Fabrizio Romano:

Consequently, we have four different sources of information basically giving four different aspects to this. Ferguson claims a new deal had already been signed. Keith Jackson apparently claims that no new deal has been signed and Kelly will be let go. Then Chris Jack claims that negotiations are ongoing for the goalkeeper to sign a new contract. Lastly, Romano says it’s done and it’s two years.
Who Do Rangers Fans Believe?
Which one do we believe? The outcome of this story will be very interesting as a pure and direct barometer of who we can actually trust, give or take, when it comes to Rangers stories and the general press.
Ferguson had an inside view. He was inside the dressing room. Barry knows a lot of the stuff that happened there as an interim coach and manager. He had privileged information that journalists just do not get.
Now we have 3 journalists directly contradicting each other’s information explicitly. Ultimately, whatever happens to Liam Kelly will be a clear measure in terms of a barometer of those journalists’ credibility.
Of course, if he does not sign a new deal, then it proves that Barry Ferguson was in fact wrong. It proves that Keith Jackson may have been correct. However, it does not necessarily prove that Chris Jack was wrong, because the negotiations may fail. And Romano would be a tad discredited.
But then why are there negotiations? What is so complex about a deputy goalkeeper’s new contract? It does not seem overly complex, but we are just simpletons, so what would we know?
At the end of the day, it is a very interesting contrast of four different sources. Who do we believe? In truth, Romano drops contract bombshell, Romano just never gets things wrong, does he?
