One year ago Rangers secured the addition of Joe Rothwell, in a signing Ibrox Noise protested.
It summed up the beginning of the fire Russell Martin era, and was a Championship slop signing.
He arrived with the usual hipster Rangers fanfare claiming he’d been a sensation at Leeds, but Ibrox Noise held a different view.
6 months later and not a single Rangers supporter was sad to see the back of him.
Well… we’re getting the same vibes from Sunderland’s Dan Neil. We’re not saying he’s rotten, but he’s Championship, and Sunderland deemed him substandard for their Premier League campaign.
He ended up at Ipswich in the Championship. Rangers should avoid Championship slop like this.
All of this is Joe Rothwell. Bournemouth weren’t interested in him in the PL, and dunted him out on loan to Leeds.
But yes, it seems Rangers are interested in bringing the U20 England international to Ibrox, in a move we can’t say is blowing us away with excitement.
Unsurprisingly he’s an upcoming free agent – Sunderland have no interest in offering him a new deal and that’s where Rangers’ interest comes in.
This is not a lucrative Bosman. He was worth about £6M last summer, and is about £4M now.
Joe Rothwell? Maybe not as utterly pants as he was, but we’re not sure we’re that excited about yet more Championship slop at Rangers.
Lawrence Shankland is an excellent addition and the right stock. But let’s not add chafe to him by bringing in Championship nobodies we’ve been linked with before. Rangers should avoid Championship slop.
If we’re going to make a quality Rangers, we need Shanklands, not Neils.
