On the potential basis of Danny Rohl retaining the Rangers managerial shift going into next season, Ibrox Noise now has to about-turn and shift our own expectations. Of course, previously, it was going to be that he was going to go via mutual consent, but it seems like something has actually changed internally. So for now, until we hear otherwise, and we will, of course, report that to you, we are going to go forward with the notion that he is remaining. And Rangers fans must reduce expectations under Danny Rohl.
European Concerns
On that basis, what can we hope for next season? Well, unfortunately, Danny Rohl has shown absolutely no gravitas in Europe. So the Conference League qualifiers, or depending on where we end up thanks to other results, are nevertheless going to be a challenge for him.
An inexperienced manager who has struggled badly in Europe against that level of competition last time around. Now, of course, that was the Europa League group stage, or as it is now known, the league phase.
But nevertheless, European football requires something quite different from domestic and Rohl, while initially doing decently domestically, has seen those wheels run off as well.
In short, his performance in Europe ended up matching his performance in the Scottish Premiership. Not ideal hence Rangers fans must reduce expectations under Danny Rohl.
The Summer Budget
But how does that go forward? Well, a number of fans simply want him to be given another season. Ultimately, Ibrox Noise knows this to be a complete waste of time, but we will put that to one side for now.
Rohl will be given a modest budget. It will not be huge, simply because we do not have Champions League to fund big signings. So while there will be an overhaul and an exodus of players, the players coming in will not be Lionel Messi.
They will not be outstanding and they will not take us up a level.
The share issue limits what we can do this summer unless, of course, it comes into play. That will be, in theory, the playing budget for Rohl.
Funding for Signings
The £16M, should it all manifest as the club hopes it will, will be the funding basis for the summer’s window.
Of course, as we have explained before, FFP means that owners cannot just put their hands in their pockets and fund us. It does not work that way. There would be legislation against such activity and it would see sanctions against Rangers.
So as it is, the share issue is about the only way that Rangers can fund new signings.
That would be a £16M budget this summer if the shares all sell.
We imagine they might because people do want to invest in the club. You can count Ibrox Noise among those, but we will find out in time whether the club accepts our application because, of course, these are applications and they do not guarantee a return.
We want to add to our shares and invest and support the club as we always do.
January Window Warning Signs
But nevertheless, what do we expect from the summer from a £16M budget from Danny Rohl? If January is anything to go by, not a lot, unfortunately.
Andreas Skov Olsen was a loan and a disaster.
Ryan Naderi has been a horrendous signing and a complete waste of cash. And of course, Tachi Chukwani has not delivered on his fee either. He has been at absolute best modest.
The one success has been Tuur Rommens, but that unfortunately is only a 25% success rate. It is not great.
If that is what Danny Rohl and Dan Purdy are going to be like this summer, then we really cannot expect too much.
Fears For Next Season
Our expectations for next season, bizarrely, is already finishing third.
If we are under Danny Rohl and Derek McInnes remains at Hearts. And Mcinnes is given the growth budget that he expects to get under Tony Bloom? Celtic will almost certainly have a new manager and be chomping at the bit with new signings… Then we would be surprised to be third.
That, unfortunately, is where we have to now look.
This is not accepting this. We in no way tolerate this, but we project this if circumstances do not change.
This is the simple reality of where we are now.
We cannot expect to be any better than third. That is where Danny Rohl is. That is where Danny Rohl’s Rangers is.
It is not ideal that Rangers fans must reduce expectations under Danny Rohl. And unfortunately, it seems to be the way things are going now.
