There are a few issues with this summer’s world cup, and we’ll not go into them, but it’s certainly the least hyped big championship we can remember. But four Rangers players confirmed already.
But while there are congratulations for John Souttar, Liam Kelly and Findlay Curtis for making the Scotland squad, there’s a bit of sadness that Connor Barron won’t feature.
Fully fit and available, it appears Steve Clarke deemed to overlook him for this, considering Scotland’s midfield options. Of course, Barron hardly played this season, injury notwithstanding.
Then there’s Nico Raskin. We’ll get onto that topic in due course. But yes, he was called up for the world cup and will be in the USA this summer for his first major championship. Belgium await his arrival in the land of the free.
Thelo Aasgaard will be praying Stale Solbakken includes him for Norway. That one may be a long shot after some recent call ups excluded him. We’re not sure he’s done enough. The squad will be announced soon.
Mohamed Diomande will NOT be going to the world cup. Not after an indifferent season at Ibrox led to the Elephants rejecting him for this summer. He will be rather gutted but he’s just not been good enough. Ivory Coast will be in group E alongside Dick Advocaat’s Curacao, ironically feature old Rangers flop Juninho Bacuna.
And, sadly, that’s where Rangers’ involvement this summer in the showpiece occasion ends.
