One thing that ‘the manager’ (whoever it is) will have to deal with this summer, is a gigantic exodus.
Rangers will be engaging with a huge overhaul this upcoming window (opening in just over a month due to the world cup) and regardless of finances and Champions League losses, Rangers are in for a massive clear out as eight Rangers players are definitely leaving Ibrox this summer.
Thanks to dreadful forward planning by previous regimes, Rangers will be losing a bunch of out of contract players, not to mention loan deals.
Eight Rangers players
Obviously, the big one is James Tavernier. He has confirmed his permanent exit this summer.
But there are many more.
A huge chunk of defence aside him is to leave, with the notable exceptions of John Souttar, Emmanuel Fernandez, Dujon Sterling and Tuur Rommens. Max Aarons, Jayden Meghoma, Derek Cornelius and Nasser Djiga will all depart for sure, with all four being loans.
In goals, Kieran Wright will also move on.
Further forward Bailey Rice looks guaranteed to move on, after no new deal was agreed.
Mikey Moore will likely return to Tottenham Hotspur and mercifully Andreas Skov Olsen heads back to Germany.
There are also huge question marks over the futures of Nico Raskin and indeed Emmanuel Fernandez.
In total, a minimum of 8 players will definitely leave this summer, requiring yet another rebuild.
Not Ideal
This is far from ideal, regardless of the merits some fans place in the quality of certain players.
The sheer logistics of this are a total mess, and show the astonishing short-sightedness of former Sporting Director Kevin Thelwell, not to mention current Head of Recruitment Dan Purdy.
They in concert with former boss Russell Martin brought in a heap of loans, and failed to secure deals with any of the expiring contracts bar Souttar.
This was pure short-terminism and had no serious backing or thought.
Furthermore, Danny Rohl and Purdy did some of the same by bringing in Andreas Skov Olsen as a loan. At least in that case it was an option to buy, and in truth, the signing was a disaster and hasn’t cost Rangers much.
But nevertheless, a colossal overhaul has been forced on Rangers this summer, and along with huge misgivings and doubts about the manager, Rangers really do face an uncertain future.
To have to rebuild the entire backline, give or take, is not an ideal situation for the new season. Albeit, one concession is just ironically how many the current defence concedes. And bringing in new talent is preferable.
But it is not really a good way to go about things.
Summer exodus of eight Rangers players
But nevertheless yet another exodus this summer will be the case.
The big issue is of course the loss of Champions League funds and a far more frugal kitty, given Rangers could be in the early Europa Conference league qualifiers with significantly less lucrative revenue streams.
But this is as yet undecided.
What is for sure, is eight Rangers players are definitely leaving Ibrox this summer, and likely more.
Third place in the league and dire forward planning have left Rangers in a complete mess.
