From what Ibrox Noise has learned from our sources, there has already been at least one internal review by Andrew Cavenagh of Danny Rohl and his position. Our understanding is that internally speaking, there have been dialogues regarding the recruitment process that led to Rohl replacing Russell Martin as the Rangers head coach. And Andrew Cavenagh is ready for more.
Recruitment Questions Raised
Of course, the issue here is Andrew Cavenagh. He was not involved in either process regarding Martin or Rohl. He left it to his football men under him to make those appointments. That is, after all, what he pays them for.
But given how both have worked out, he is clear that these were incorrect appointments on both occasions. Cavenagh, of course, feels nothing more than embarrassment right now because he publicly endorsed and backed Danny Rohl as the long term coach of Rangers.
The treatment of James Tavernier in recent times has cast a huge spell over Rohl’s ability to manage situations at a club of the gravity of Rangers. And of course, the results certainly have not helped.
Internal Persuasion
Cavenagh arranged an internal review of those recruitment processes, particularly Rohl. But we understand that despite the fact that he was ready to release Rohl and arrange mutual consent, someone internally persuaded Cavenagh not to pull the trigger.
We know who we believe this was. We are not going to name names at this moment in time. But we know who we believe this to have been. Consequently, Cavenagh held fire. Rohl was given a reprieve.
Consequently, today, that situation has been reawoken. The treatment of Tavernier has changed the complexity of this issue and it made it more clear cut.
Another Review Incoming
Cavenagh has not pulled the trigger yet and will now be creating another assessment of Rohl properly over the next few weeks to decide if he is the man to take the club forward and use the summer budget for next season because, of course, here is the big issue.
Rangers will have a budget. As we have reported many times, it will not be the Champions League level budget. It might not even be the Europa League level budget. We still are not sure exactly where Rangers are qualified in Europe.
We do, of course, have a place and it all depends naturally on the cup final result. But either way, there is the £16M share issue to be taken into account regarding player funding.
Time Will Tell
But at the end of the day, Cavenagh will now engage a full, proper, thorough internal review and this time he is going to 100% decide whether or not Rohl is the man to go forward with.
That is a very big call. He was ready to pull the trigger and release him, but that was reversed, as we said, by internal persuasion by other individuals. And as we have said, we know who we believe they were.
But for now, Danny Rohl remains in position. He remains the head coach and that does not look like it is going to continue a heck of a lot longer if Andrew Cavenagh is ready comes to the same conclusion again that he did last time.
But time will tell what way he goes.
