In an astonishing turn of events today, as we all know, Chairman Andrew Cavenagh threw his full weight behind manager Danny Rohl, despite all the pressure on the beleaguered Rangers boss. This in itself has led to an outpouring of utter frustration from Rangers fans who suggest that Cavenagh is entirely out of touch and that Rangers’ following season is already over before it even began. This is certainly Ibrox Noise’s view as Andrew Cavenagh backs Rohl.
Interview
However, one further aspect of this interview featuring Cavenagh throwing said weight behind his coach was that he blamed categorically the players. Andrew Cavenagh put all the responsibility of Rangers’ failure this season on the players. Danny Rohl was barely given any hint of criticism and his chairman backed him completely to the hilt.
Agreement
Now, of course, up till around two weeks ago, many fans would probably have agreed with Cavenagh. They also would have blamed the players completely for almost every ill this season. This is something Ibrox Noise never entirely agreed with. We do accept that some of the players clearly did not deliver and some quite simply were not good enough. We named quite a few of them throughout the season. Mikey Moore said a lot of the same.
But at the end of the day, they are still following the instruction and image of their manager. He sets them out, he gives them their instructions and their orders, and they have to follow them. Consequently, the things that go wrong are hugely in part due to those instructions.
Under the bus
But nevertheless, after Rohl himself threw the players under the bus recently, the chairman has done the same. Glasgow Rangers’ own chairman has blamed the players for the failure this season. Now, of course, as we say, they are not innocent. They have a part to play.
But the fact that the chairman blamed a whole crowd of employees of his club and left one more or less innocent and alleviated of blame does tell you just what kind of direction Rangers as a club appear to be going in.
Untouchable
The manager appears to be completely untouchable at the moment. Andrew Cavenagh backs Rohl. A quite astonishing turn of events just given how poorly the season ended. But nevertheless, the fact that the chairman himself has blamed all of these players and has more or less lifted any sense of responsibility from the manager says everything you need to know about how out of touch Andrew Cavenagh actually is and how untouchable Danny Rohl appears to be.
