Whatever the outcome of season 25-26, Rangers need an overhaul this summer. While many fans will make an argument if we win the league that the squad is good enough, at the same time it abundantly is not.
Squad Changes Incoming
We know that Nasser Djiga is going back to Wolves. We also know that Max Aarons, albeit he was a poor signing, will also be returning to the Premier League. Rangers have a number of players out of contract this summer, and consequently there will need to be a bit of work done there.
The Lesson Of 55
The big deal of course is if Rangers do win the Premiership, you cannot rest on your laurels. Rangers rested on their laurels at 55. We signed four bang average players that following summer. We spent no money on them. They were all free transfers. We then went on to completely crash the following season. It was the beginning of our decline.
After having built up to 55, we let the whole thing slip because Douglas Park and the others would not invest and supplement the squad. Consequently, we ended up weaker and it all went to pot. Steven Gerrard left because of it.
Liverpool Warning Signs
Just like it had for Liverpool, both titles by them and Rangers during Covid the year earlier, which Ibrox Noise highlighted over and over again, and the same thing that happened under Slot last season. This seems to be a repeating pattern for Liverpool and we seriously hope it is not one that Rangers repeat as well.
That is; winning a league, building towards it, then resting on the laurels of victory, making mistakes, and letting it all slip. Dominance is possible, but only with the right decision making. Rangers did not do that after 55. Liverpool certainly did not do it twice either.
Investment Is Non Negotiable
Consequently, money must be invested this summer, especially if we win, and especially if we lose, no matter what happens regarding the league title. There has to be a better summer window than we have had recently.
We need more Rangers level players. Tuur Rommens shows what a Rangers level player is. The club nailed that one. Danny Rohl and Dan Purdy definitely scouted properly to bring the Belgian star in. He has been a revelation and by far the best signing, with instant impact at Rangers level, that the club has made in seasons.
Standards Must Rise
But the likes of Ryan Naderi do not shine at that level, nowhere near it. There is the cult backing that will always support whoever Rangers sign. It is the way the Rangers fans are. Then of course blame the players when there is a bad result, but that is another story.
But this summer, we need many, many Tuur Rommens coming in. That is the level Rangers need. We need defenders who know how to defend and midfielders who can command the game. And we also need a forward line that looks dangerous and can score goals.
We do not really have that in abundance right now, not like we used to.
No Standing Still
This is why having the owners that we do, who are raising share issues and funding, must deliver in the summer to keep everything going, to keep improvement ticking over, and ensuring Rangers do not sit on any laurels, whether we win or lose this year. Rangers need an overhaul.
It is absolutely vital to keep on investing and getting it right, because the minute you sit still, you lose out after 55. As we did.
