A very big question for Rangers fans at Rangers v Motherwell today is involving the massively important right back position at Ibrox. As we know, James Tavernier is leaving Govan this summer. He will no longer be captain and he will no longer be employed by the club any longer. However, it leaves the issue of right back quite open because, of course, Dujon Sterling has had issues with injuries and also has a personal issue with the law to deal with at the moment. Max Aarons is the other option and he has been, quite frankly, terrible and he is on loan anyway and will be going back to Bournemouth at the end of the season.
Who starts at right back for Rangers
So consequently, seeing who starts at right back for Rangers v Motherwell today will be very interesting indeed. There are a fair few subplots that are kicking in at this point. Subplot A, will Tavernier just downright start and be captain? The second part would be, will he be benched, Sterling starts and who plays as captain? Third, that would likely be Nico Raskin. In fact, it certainly would be. That would be an audition for the early start of the Raskin as captain era, if indeed that comes to pass and he does not leave for another team.
The captaincy subplot and bench questions
The fourth aspect, of course, is who will be on the bench? Will it be Aarons? Could it be Sterling? Will it be Tavernier? Getting the right back position is rather important for Rangers. It is a very strange area filled with flux.
Full back uncertainty on both sides
Unfortunately, left back at the moment is not a lot better because Tuur Rommens is not available yet. It will still be Jayden Meghoma who is in that position at left back. He is mooted to go back home to Brentford at the end of this season as well. Consequently, having an area of flux in both full back positions is not ideal, but it is a very intriguing aspect to see who will be the starter. It is likely to be Tavernier. He is the big news at the moment.
But of course, Sterling is quite simply the better right back, but he may or may not have personal/injury issues at the moment. So it is hard to call that one. We will be very interested to see who gets that berth for Rangers v Motherwell today.
