There is a story doing the rounds at the moment regarding Nasser Djiga’s Rangers transfer. It has been ‘revealed’ by some sources that Djiga is going back to Wolverhampton Wanderers this summer. Well, no kidding, Sherlock. He is on loan. The issue is not so much that the story is untrue, it is more that it is a touch misleading.
Why Nasser Djiga may return to Wolves
The reality is that Djiga wants to remain at Rangers, but there are two significant problems with the Burkina Faso international. Those problems are all financial based. Wolverhampton Wanderers want to make as much back of the £10M they spent on him. They are willing to accept £9M, but Rangers want him for a lot less. Rangers are willing to spend no more than £5M on this boy. Furthermore, the issue of wages. Unfortunately, Nasser Djiga’s Rangers transfer is on a salary around £70,000 a week. Rangers are currently footing about £30,000 of that, but the full total would become Rangers. Djiga would have to accept a gigantic wage cut. He wants to remain at Rangers, and Wolves are happy to sell to Rangers for a decent amount of cash, but his salary is not possible to negotiate. That is, Rangers have no way of paying that kind of money and would refuse to do so anyway.
Rangers have learned from past transfer mistakes
The fact is, if Djiga is to remain at Rangers, his salary would have to be halved at least. Rangers are willing to spend £35,000 a week on him, but he is, of course, on a salary that is double that. Consequently, the transfer fee is far, far, far too high at the moment, as are the salaries. This means that Rangers have learned from last summer. It would be an absolute reticent untruth to say that Youssef Chermiti has been a success. He cost £11M and the 49ers Enterprises have learned from that kind of mistake. We have spent far too much on strikers who have not worked out or delivered. While there are positive things being said about Ryan Naderi, he has nevertheless not lived up to £5M either. Rangers have struggled to get value for money up front and elsewhere and certainly are not in the market to shell out £11M or the like on risks. Gone are the days that we are willing to spend that kind of money on players who are nowhere near worth that kind of money.
Value for money will define the summer
We say that, of course, but Ryan Naderi certainly was not worth £5M that we spent that on him too. The summer should be certainly interesting when it comes to value for money and what Rangers actually get. Nevertheless, that still backs into the point about Djiga. Rangers are not willing to spend the likes of £10M on something that does not seem to be truly worth it. He has been a very good player this calendar year and Ibrox Noise now 100% endorses securing him permanently, but not at £10M and not for £70,000 a week. And basic maths tells you that Rangers agree entirely, which means the chance Nasser Djiga’s Rangers transfer unless this can become parity with all three parties is pretty low.
