It’s been quite the story. However the results on Sunday unfolded, Rangers were top of the table at the start of play.
And coming from 6th, it’s quite the turnaround.
Yes, many Rangers fans are pushing a fake story that Rohl took Rangers over in 11th. It’s untrue. Rangers were 6th after Steven Smith’s draw with Dundee Utd.
But at one point the team under Russell Martin was indeed second-bottom, an unthinkable position not seen since 1989 and when we were bottom, as widely discussed in recent match analysis.
From chaos to control
Now, even being top isn’t that big a deal – Philippe Clement did it, Michael Beale did it, Gio did it, Stevie did it.
In fact, the only manager in Rangers’ reasonably recent history aside the horrendous 2012-2018 era not to have Rangers top was Russell Martin.
Danny Rohl has now become standard, putting Rangers in a position the club is supposed to be in. We got gaslighted that badly by Martin that to this day fans still compare with him, even though he was only in charge for barely four months, something echoed in coverage of the club’s direction.
The scar Martin left will never heal. Fans will call every manager God compared with the Vegan.
But Rohl has us top, and you cannot argue with number one.
He now joins standard Rangers managers in having our club at the summit of the table, even if it was only for a few hours till Hearts’ trip to Livi, a point even raised externally in discussion about Rangers’ rebuild.
Does it actually matter
Does that count? Well, yes, even 12 hours at the top of the table is better than no hours.
When all matches and results are settled and done, that carries a bit more weight, but Rohl managed to steer 6th to 1st. And that is a fact, something we highlighted previously when Rangers legends noticed something major about Rohl.
So does this mean Ibrox Noise buys in?
2iar is what will win us over. That’s right, we’ve done one-off titles before and without a second, it’s a fleeting light, not a burning candle.
But he will still be a vaunted hero if he can win 56 this season, with fans starved of titles since 2012.
Reality check still bites
For us Hearts and Celtic have the edge. Rohl still stumbled in the easiest match he’ll face for the rest of the season. 7th placed Utd was the weakest team he’ll deal with and he made hard work of it. So now it’s top 6 all round. We can’t see him getting 6 wins out of 6, as great as that would be.
His record against the final 7 prior to Utd was 5 wins of 11, now 6 of 12. MON was 5 of 9, while McInnes has 9 of 14.
Hearts record is just that bit stronger, and it’s their title now to lose.
But no matter what, Rohl has done better than Martin, Rangers were top, and that’s a win for 99% of Rangers fans.
