Rangers stopped the Martin bleeding, but it’s time to go one better now

There’s a lot of talk about where Danny Rohl has gotten Rangers to, and while it’s hit a bit of a ceiling, having dropped a space, just where WAS the club when Russell Martin got canned?

Well, let’s not forget we did draw another one after that under Steven Smith v Utd, before we then appointed Rohl. In a bit of a rush.

There’s a lot of rhetoric about where the German has taken Rangers from, so just exactly where were Rangers before Rohl took over.

6th

Not quite as abysmal as the 11th that some of the rhetoric would argue. Still miles below where we needed to be.

As you can see from this exact table, Rangers were 6th on the day Rohl took over.

Today we are third.

This is neither pro nor anti Rohl, it’s neutral.

We’re just reporting that in the grand scheme of things, we’ve risen 3 spots in the league total.

In itself, not really that much to shout about.

The league win rate is interesting too.

Martin was the worst ever manager in Rangers’ history, just one league win in 7.

Everything else was a draw bar the loss at Hearts.

Rohl has 13 wins in 21. Much better than before but still miles short of where Rangers would want.

As Chris Jack put it, Rangers’ overall record under Rohl isn’t title-winning. And well-known friend of Ibrox Noise Bill McMurdo agrees that our fans have kind of accepted where we currently are and just have hope for the future these days.

Things are definitely better than they were under Russell Martin, but they’re also back to pre-Martin days. And that’s the kicker – Rangers have merely stopped the Martin rot, but not improved beyond what it was before we appointed him.

It’s much the same now as it was under Clement, Beale and even Gio domestically.

Third or second isn’t good enough for Rangers – Rohl needs to find a way to lift this club beyond also-rans.

Whether he can go one better than the likes of Clement et al only time will tell – and he can get a big boost with a win over Celtic this weekend in the cup.
