It’s pretty safe to say two Scandinavian signings of the past two windows haven’t really worked out with Olsen and Aasgaard axed.
Thelo Aasgaard has been the predictable fail a £5M Luton playmaker from League One was likely to be. Meanwhile Andreas Skov Olsen has really struggled to make an impact.
And sadly for both it’s led to the same as Mohamed Diomande’s poor Rangers career has. Ultimately: being ditched from their national teams.
Norway left Aasgaard out of their upcoming fixtures, while Denmark also left Skov Olsen out of their squad.
Skov Olsen
Skov Olsen has endured an underwhelming start to his Rangers loan, because that’s all it is. A loan, with valuable option. This is something the Dane is going to have to hike up for to earn the move.
Meanwhile we have already shelled out the money for Aasgaard and Luton are still laughing all the way to the bank.
He has been a really poor addition, and while there are glimpses of some talent, at 24 or so you’d expect more for the investment.
Skov Olsen too has not hit the ground running but he has a better CV. Great spells in his homeland, and with Bruges made us all think this was a player we’d love to have.
Impressed
Alas lesser ones in Italy and Germany expose his ability under pressure, equal to Rangers, and safe to say he’s impressed few.
There is of course time for these guys to turn it around. But they follow Diomande being axed for the AFCON. And they’re another couple of Rangers players whose Ibrox form has seen them lose their national slot.
Of course, the oddity is today’s star, Emmanuel Fernandez, getting his call to Nigeria. With Leon Balogun long-retired, the Super Eagles scouted Rangers’ CB as a squad pick.
Anomaly
We hope he does well, even if he’s the anomaly right now at Ibrox.
Either way, it doesn’t help Aasgaard or Skov Olsen.
Those two either need to improve pronto and look worthy of the shirt, or lest they will be unlikely to play for their nations again.
Mind you, if Matondo could get a call for Wales…
