The question of John Souttar’s future at Rangers is an intriguing one. Recently extended, something Ibrox Noise was in favour of, the Scotland defender has completely lost his place at the heart of Rangers rearguard. We were in favour, as we say, of the extension. He is a useful squad member, but as we have said many times about John Souttar, he has never developed as a Rangers defender. Alas he remained pretty much at the level of Hearts, as they were when we signed him, pretty much ever since he has been in Govan. He just has not raised that level. John Souttar new deal

A steady but limited defender

A solid, reasonably dependable defender who is especially good at last ditch blocks and has improved his distribution a little bit, but overall has not stepped up in the way that you need to as a Rangers defender. Souttar has never been awful, far from it. He has been dependable and reliable, solid, but never quite excelling. Scotland defender form Rohl view

The standard of the past

When we look at past Rangers defenders of the proper ilk of Ibrox, we think about the Richard Goughs, the Terry Butchers, the David Weirs, and of course, the Carlos Cuellars. These were the true standard of Rangers defender from the olden days, and admittedly from the olden days. Life has changed at Rangers since 2012, and we all know this. But even since then, it is pretty obvious who a top player is. McGregor in goal, even Leon Balogun. He was a top defender back in the day, even if he could not stay fit. Souttar does not get to those levels. contract situation

Squad role and future

He has become a solid squad member who has completely lost his place ever since he got his contract. So what happens with him now? Not much. Simply put, he is a squad option. He is a decent player who will step in when he is needed, but for now, John Souttar is a secure, reliable squad option in the event of a Djiga, a Fernandez, or anybody else getting injured. player reaction

Summer implications

The Cornelius situation at Rangers is very bleak. That one has completely fallen apart, which does mean that Rangers will need a new body at the back in the summer. Of course, Djiga himself is technically going to be leaving as well. He is, of course, on loan. Even although there is a possibility that Rangers might be able to secure him permanently from Wolves, nevertheless, it is not the cheapest option. He would be around £10M. But either way, John Souttar’s future at Rangers at Rangers looks solid, even if he is unlikely to exactly play an awful lot from here on in.
