The former Marseille stopper came to Rangers on loan with option to buy. And Ibrox Noise understands discussions have internally taken place regarding making the deal indeed permanent.

His attitude, professionalism and mentality have impressed Rangers’ manager. While Rangers fans haven’t seen a lot of Cornelius, his CV goes without saying.

He also confirmed on arrival that he ‘gets’ Rangers and how essential winning is. He explained he’d had experience of that same demand at Marseille.

Consequently, Rangers are likely to make the deal a full one this summer, at a fee of around £4M, given his value as a left-sided defender and the quality he can bring to the club.

Naturally a full summer window will see a lot of turnover at Ibrox. Depending on events this term Cornelius is very likely to become a permanent addition.

On arriving he said:

“At clubs like Rangers, there’s an expectation to win. And that extra pressure that we’re getting from outside and maybe the chaos that I’m stepping into, I view it as a privilege and as a challenge to come here and try to help the situation.

Clubs like Marseille and Rangers, it’s clubs with fan bases that live and die for the club and when you wear that badge and you represent clubs like that, you have a responsibility to really show on the pitch for them.

So playing at Marseille last season gave me a little bit of experience of just what I’m getting into coming to Rangers.”

So he gets it – he knows there’s pressure like there isn’t at many other clubs.

He knows what he got involved in at Ibrox and while Rangers fans aren’t overly familiar with him, his permanent addition is seen as a wise move by the hierarchy at Ibrox. Derek Cornelius confirmed in discussions.
