If the match against Hearts proved one thing, it is the lack of development from John Souttar. Ibrox Noise are big fans of the Scotland international. We genuinely like this lad. However, we must admit there is no real difference between the John Souttar we signed and the John Souttar today. He has not developed as a Rangers defender but he is a solid, borderline above average defender. He does a good enough job but never truly excels. John Souttar’s contract is a hot topic.
Same Player, Same Level
He is good for blocks. Even so, his SofaScore ratings rank among the lower ones in the Rangers side. Injury issues have mostly cleared for the former Hearts man. However, he was at sixes and sevens for most of yesterday.
He was completely exposed for Hearts’ second goal. His defending was non existent. For a big alpha defender, he does not dominate in the air.
Consequently, we do wonder about his contract position. Rohl has confirmed negotiations over a new deal. Ibrox Noise support extending him. We want to keep him. However, we must admit the improvement has not come.
He has not let the club down. Equally, he has never truly stood out.
Honest but Limited
Souttar is a good lad. He gives everything. He embodies the hardworking defender.
We would compare him to a slightly better version of Kirk Broadfoot. He is decent, functional and honest. However, he lacks polish. He has not developed further.
What do we mean by development. It means stepping up to the level of your new club and improving every aspect of your game.
It means looking worthy of the shirt you now wear.
He has not done that.
Ceiling Reached
The truth is simple. John Souttar remains the same defender we signed. That is not necessarily a bad thing.
We signed a capable defender. He was Hearts’ standout figure at the time. However, he has not progressed beyond that.
He will not let you down. Equally, he will not resemble Davey Weir.
He is solid. He is dependable. However, he may not justify the salary he seeks.
We would value him at around £15,000 per week. He is Rangers level, give or take. He is not a Hall of Famer.
Contract Caution
We will see how John Souttar’s contract develops. He will probably sign a new deal. However, it should not be on lavish terms. He has not earned that.
We are unsure if he is an automatic first pick. He probably is. Either way, Rangers must be cautious about what they offer him.
