When Youssef Chermiti banged a couple in against Celtic at Parkhead, even Ibrox Noise briefly subscribed to the theory the £11M-man could salvage his Rangers career. Chermiti’s Parkhead fluke looks more stark all the time.
It has, alas, turned into proof that even a broken clock is right twice a day.
Chermiti might be kind of big and a bit of a hold-up man, but he simply isn’t a £11M striker.
His display at Motherwell reaffirmed what a staggering waste of money Youssef Chermiti has been.
We can only imagine the Portuguese U21 national side is rank, given the call-ups he gets, because Chermiti continues, aside that Celtic Park aberration, to fail completely for Rangers.
And even Ibrox Noise, who have our misgivings about Ryan Naderi, expected the German to start against the Steelmen.
When Chermiti took the shirt, all bets were off.
Chermiti doesn’t score. He is clumsy on the ball. He doesn’t get into goalscoring positions. Chermiti plays far too deep and overall offers no threat.
For someone who fans think operates better as a 10, he has a whole 2 assists for the season. Unimpressive.
He managed an ok 4 shots last night, 2 on target, but his passing was tripe, in the 50% range. For someone who can hold the ball up and bring others in, he didn’t do a lot of that. He did win 8 aerials, but he’s a big guy so that’s not surprising.
The problem with Chermiti is he does no damage. To anyone. He fulfils quotas, and that’s about it.
His stats are often flattering, because he offers no real threat. He’s doing all his stuff in areas that don’t hurt opponents.
And how he managed that double in Glasgow’s east end we’ll never know.
He’s been a shocker of a signing, an £11M waste of money, and Rohl’s selection of him at Fir Park was just one of a dozen errors the manager made.
We’re by no means Naderi disciples, but he has to be better than Chermiti.
Right? Well his passing was identical to Chermiti’s – 50%. 0 shots this time, in the 35 minutes he got.
So we’re hardly bowled over by that one amid Chermiti’s Parkhead fluke.
Miovski, Chermiti and Naderi. Have an SPL Rangers ever had a worse selection of drivel up front? That’s £20M down the pan right there.
Goodness.
