Rangers striker options fall badly short at a wasted £25M

We’re not going to say Celtic have stolen a march on Rangers striker issues via the signing of Tomas Cvancara from Borussia. The striker is pretty mediocre at best these days, only ever having shone with one club. Admittedly that club was Sparta Prague and much of it was under the guidance of the impressive Brian Priske.

He didn’t do so well in Germany for Borussia, but then our very own Andreas Skov Olsen also didn’t.

But regardless of whether Tomas Cvancara is or isn’t a top striker, Rangers absolutely need one.

Ibrox Noise mentioned this in passing yesterday, how important getting a new hitman is.

Sorry, but none of Youssef Chermiti, Bojan Miovski or Danilo cut it. And they’ve cost £25M between them!

We detail each striker and why they’re not doing the job:

Chermiti:

Managed a couple of goals in a little burst, gaining a tonne of favour for his heroics at Celtic Park, but overall his contribution has been negligible. He has 2 assists and 4 goals for the season, and for a £1M striker that’s a poor return. But he’s a £10M striker, so it’s dire. He is big and strong, and does have a knack for holding the ball up. But he just can’t score. So despite the goals at the east end, he’s not the answer.

Miovski:

Same as Chermiti in his returns, Ibrox Noise was against this as a permanent signing. We feared the jersey was too heavy, given he struggled at Girona. We were shot down many times with ‘he was outstanding at Aberdeen, he’ll coast it at Rangers’. What we’re seeing now is what concerned us. Unfortunately Miovski isn’t a pressure striker – he’s a midtable striker. He can’t handle heat. His record for the season is a little eensy bit better than Chermiti’s – 8 goals and an assist in 26 outings. But few would recommend him as the answer.

Danilo:

Aside always being injured, Danilo has been as bad as Chermiti in that he has cost the same and delivered the same. Around north of £10M and barely any return. He’s not a target man, he doesn’t have much power, and his one asset, his clinical finishing, has also deserted him lately. His record overall is honking. 25 goals and assists in 75. Another bad use of big money from Rangers.

So it’s pretty clear Rangers are a real serious striker short of having a more equipped squad.

It’s pertinent to get someone in – someone of the build of Chermiti but with the goals to match. These don’t grow on trees. Daniel Cousins are hard to find nowadays.

But if Rangers are genuine about winning this league, a big strong bustling striker who knows where the goal is is a must.

We have no one outfitted to do that job and we’re relying on defenders to score goals due to Rangers striker issues.

That’s not going to work long term, and is probably a major reason we have been so horrible in Europe and the bulk of the big matches this season.

We have 10 days left of this window – boy do we hope a decent striker shows up.
