We get that some Rangers fans were probably just trying to be nice about Kieran Dowell. However the reality is we at Ibrox Noise could not be more delighted to get rid of the absolute waster and dire signing that was Kieran Dowell. Rangers did impeccably to get a financial package for Dowell. He originally arrived as a free signing from Norwich.
A free signing that never delivered
Brought in by Michael Beale, he was billed as a ‘deputy’ for Todd Cantwell. He was meant to play a similar role. However he had nowhere near the same reputation. Dowell, to his credit, did have around 18 Premier League appearances. That spell came with a doomed Norwich side. He was at best a Championship slop player. He was an EFL slop player. And he pretty much looked like that whenever he played for Rangers.
If ever a player made absolutely no contribution until his final match (with a goal), it was Dowell. Dowell was only on around £8k a week. That was a modest pay package. Therefore we are not going to call him a parasite. But if ever a wrong player was given elevated status at Rangers, it was Dowell.
Inflated status under multiple managers
One of the many things that spelled the doom of the Russell Martin era was how the ex manager spoke up Dowell. Martin bizarrely portrayed him as the number one player in the squad. He was described as a leader. Framed as a senior captain. He was even sold as an outstanding individual.
We are sure Dowell is a nice enough bloke. Aren’t they all. But he is not even the level of St Mirren. Never mind Rangers. He did do quite well at Birmingham City we believe. But that’s City. Not Rangers.
Chronic at Ibrox
At Ibrox he was absolutely chronic. He created nothing in terms of impact and was passive. He was ordinary; the epitome of EFL slop trash. This type of player has been brought in too many times. Too many managers and directors of football are responsible.
His market value when we signed him was barely £1M. We do not understand why he got such an elevated position. This happened under Beale. It continued under Philippe Clement. Then of course Russell Martin followed suit. The only one who slightly reduced his ‘role’ was Rohl. Ironically enough.
Finally moved on
Nevertheless Dowell is gone now. The reaction from many fans has been predictable. Oh what a nice guy. Good luck to him in his career. Ibrox Noise does not diametrically oppose this view. However we do not share the kindness.
He is gone. Thank goodness. He is no longer our problem. The club pulled off a blinder by getting a fee for him. We actually sold him. We sold this guy. He was beyond surplus. Yet we got money for him.
That is superb work from all concerned. It does show the club might be headed in the right direction. Joe Rothwell was due to leave as well. Thank goodness for that one too. At the end of the day we trimmed the wage bill. We moved on a player no fans endorsed or supported. Apart from the hipsters who support just about anything.
Goodbye Kieran Dowell.
