Last night at Ibrox, Danny Rohl probably achieved his very first at Rangers. His very first what? His very first genuinely credible victory. Not just a victory either. It was one in Europe. Danny Rohl’s European win was notable.

Context Around the Run

Now, many reading this might think, seven in a row, surely he’s had many more credible victories than that. Rohl is getting a lot of hype right now because of the run he’s been on. And it is absolutely true that you can only beat the teams that you play. However, Aberdeen nor Celtic had a manager. Three matches in a row in which Rangers were playing or facing a side lacking a leader. A disjointed mess to say the least, in all cases. Then the most recent domestic match, Annan, was little more than a training ground exercise.

Even the victory over Motherwell included a bizarre non-penalty which really should have been given. St Mirren, well, they’re a decent side, but we wouldn’t necessarily say that they’re an incredible one. But nevertheless, in terms of serious victories, Rohl had probably lacked any up to this point. That is in terms of an opponent in good condition and ready for the fight. Hearts would have been the last match in which Rangers faced a top side in that condition. And of course, Rohl was handily beaten.

Europa League Night at Ibrox

So last night in the Europa League, while there were no real pressures on the home side, which we will get to in a moment, there was a lot riding for the visitors. Bulgarian side Ludogorets had a lot to play for. They’re still in the Europa League. They are very much fighting for a playoff spot for the next round. So there is a lot for them to gain. They never really tested Rangers to the high extent that they could have. It wasn’t really a tough match for Rangers. And this is because the home tactics did a good job of keeping Ludogorets fairly well at bay.

Pressure and the Coefficient

However, that point we mentioned earlier about pressure? Well, there wasn’t really any on Rangers being already out of the Europa League. But as we explained in the previous entry, there was also a massive amount of pressure on the home side. The coefficient really matters now. Due to results elsewhere, Rangers critically have to win both of their final two matches. Next season’s Champions League participation is up for grabs between Rangers, Olympiacos and Copenhagen.

Champions League

This is in terms of an automatic qualifying spot. Rangers do not want to be in the qualifying rounds. In order to achieve this and secure more coefficient points, we must win both remaining matches. One half is done. However, the next one is as essential and, of course, is a trip away. Away trip to Porto who are desperate for an automatic KO spot. Fail to win that one and it will be qualifying rounds. That applies even if we win the Scottish Premiership this season. That is, unfortunately, the damage that bad European performances from Scottish clubs have done. Rangers’ excellent work over that five-year period from Gerrard up till recently has really been wiped out. That has happened due to recent results under Martin and Rohl.

Why the Win Matters Financially

So, consequently, getting the win last night was an excellent result for the coefficient. It improves Rangers’ chances of getting into the league stage automatically. That would be the Champions League. Now, some might wonder why that matters anyway. That is because we’re nowhere near ready for the Champions League. And that is indeed true. Rangers will not do particularly well if we get to the group next season. However, the money on offer is critical.

49ers Resources

While the 49ers do have massive resources regardless, Rangers are spending big. FFP legislation and European participation demand that we work within our means. There are resources now. But at the same time, we need the Champions League income to keep everything in balance. The filthy lucre of around £60M Rangers would get simply by qualifying is undeniable. We’ve discussed how that number breaks down quite a few times. We’re not going to repeat it here. But nevertheless, that Danny Rohl’s European win last night was a very important one. That is regarding that future endeavour. We just have one more to go now.
