As much as 9 points from 9 under Danny Rohl recently is a perfect record, coupled with the confirmed addition of Tochi Chukwuani, there is a speck of caution also needed. Martin O’Neil v Danny Rohl is very much on the agenda now.
Denmark’s Andreas Skov Olsen is also closing in, and things do look a lot healthier too with the arrival of Jim Gillespie as CEO, but there’s a BUT.
Reality
Celtic no longer have a clown in charge, nor a boss who doesn’t want to be there.
Older Rangers fans will be well aware of how strong Martin O’Neill’s Celtic were 26 years ago, and he has returned to do the same again.
Celtic have won every match he’s coached this season aside a defeat in Denmark to Midtjylland, and that includes an Old Firm victory at Ibrox v Danny Rohl, albeit on penalties.
O’Neill built a bruiser Celtic back in 2000, a bunch of man mountains who could play football as well. He very much was (and is) their Walter, albeit with a few less trophies.
For the Rangers fans mocking his age, it doesn’t appear to be affecting how well his team responds to him. And the banter years of Nancy are sadly over now.
Our point?
While many Rangers fans will rage at this article and yell ‘forget them it’s what we do that counts’, well, they remain our rivals and the gloating over Nancy suggests Rangers supporters do pay a little attention to them now and then. And with MON back, they will be a lot more settled and a far more serious prospect.
Danny Rohl has done far, far better than expected in the league. Europe was a disaster, but his league record is dropping just seven points. 11 wins of 14 with those two draws and that Hearts loss.
It’s very close to proper Rangers level.
The question is can he keep this up in face of what is likely to be a resurgent Celtic under the bouncing leprechaun?
This is where the real mettle is tested. Can Rohl keep Rangers winning with Celtic almost certainly getting a manager level up.
It is absolutely true, that what Rangers do is what counts. But it takes one slip now and the major progress achieved crashes. We just can’t see them lot dropping many points at all from here on in.
And that’s with the squad they currently have – they will surely make additions this window.
We’ve not forgotten Hearts – they remain top of the table by right, but with Rangers and Celtic finding their feet now, we do wonder how long McInnes can keep them there.
Rohl is doing the right things at the moment, or, at least, getting the results.
That is priority number one. Keep it up and we’ll win Martin O’Neil v Danny Rohl.
