Rangers fans will either be amused or disgusted by infamous Sporting Director Kevin Thelwell’s latest comments on ‘the situation’. The situation in which Kevin Thelwell blames Russell Martin.

The much-maligned boss at Ibrox (because that’s what he is) was speaking to Rangers TV in an exclusive interview which was never going to go down well with the natives, and gave a soundbite which Ibrox Noise more than raised an eyebrow too.

He said:

“It’s a slightly different situation for us in that we’ve lost a head coach and we’ve appointed a new head coach in Danny,” admitted Thelwell. “We’re very keen to make sure that he’s an integral part of that [transfer] process going forward. We’ve had a big meeting this week to talk about his feelings around the group so far, what he’s learned about them, and areas we both think we can improve. Going forward now, we’ll use that information, plus the information from the owners and other sources, to start to plan for January. We do expect to be fairly active. It is about Danny having the final say in these moments. It very much is about us working together in this instance, and Danny having the final say.”

The crucial part is:

“It is about Danny having the final say in these moments. It very much is about us working together in this instance, and Danny having the final say.”

Kevin Thelwell, is, without any shame, passing the buck of recruitment to ‘the manager’. He can’t blame Danny Rohl for anything seeing as he took over not long ago, but Russell Martin previously operated under the same model.

Blame

And Thelwell is seemingly indirectly blaming him for the dire signings of the summer transfer window.

Now, we know Martin is an easy target for all that went wrong, but Thelwell is very much carrying that forward now and has become public enemy number one.

And by saying Rohl has the final say now, he’s implying Martin did then.

Which means he’s blaming Martin for Emmanuel Fernandez, for Youssef Chermiti.

He’s passing the recruitment buck of responsibility over to the head coach, by saying ‘we find the players, I find the players, but the coach has to approve.’

In the summer for Chermiti and other fails, it’s now all Martin’s fault. And if any duds arrive in January, that’s on Rohl apparently.

Thelwell likes to pull strings from afar, but if things go wrong, it’s not his fault. Kevin Thelwell blames Russell Martin and is ready to blame Rohl.

He really is a bit of a chancer, isn’t he?
