If there is one subject now bordering on fury among Rangers fans, it is the baffling transfer decisions made by the club this summer. Supporters are left stunned at the players the club didn’t sign – versus the ones it did. And three names in particular are lighting up fan forums: Lennon Miller, Abdallah Sima and Vaclav ÄŒerný. Rangers’ questionable choices in the transfer market surface.
These were realistic, viable signings. Two were already in Govan. One was Scotland’s brightest midfield talent outside the Old Firm. Yet all three now play elsewhere – for fees well below what Rangers were allegedly quoted.
The ones that got away for pennies
Let’s start with the two loanees. Sima and ÄŒerný both impressed in recent seasons. Rangers were said to have baulked at price tags nearing £8 million for either. That turned out to be utter nonsense. Both players were sold for less than that – considerably so.
Sima, despite injury spells, had shown quality and adaptability. Černý was arguably even more consistent. But Rangers declined to act on either. They left. And fans are right to ask: why?
Then there’s Lennon Miller. Possibly the biggest miss of all. The young midfielder was the most coveted Scottish talent outside Glasgow. Rangers were in line to sign him. The price? Around £5 million. Instead of moving quickly and sealing the deal, Rangers hesitated. Udinese swooped. Now he’s a Serie A player – and we’re left empty-handed.
The baffling alternatives
So who did Rangers sign?
Thello Asgaard, unknown and untested, arrived from League One. Djeidi Gassama, same level, same mystery. Oliver Antman came in from Holland, and Mikey Moore is a Premier League youth with little senior experience. None are SPL-tested. None have any association with Rangers. And none carry the proven quality of the three we let slip.
Even Ally McCoist has questioned the wisdom of these choices. The Rangers legend openly admitted he’s baffled by the direction. Why splash millions on obscure EFL names when proven, fan-approved talents were ignored?
A bigger problem than players?
This disconnect between what the club signs and what fans expect hints at a deeper issue. Ibrox Noise has covered the fan unrest in depth. The root cause may well lie with the club’s sporting director. Kevin Thelwell’s decisions have raised more eyebrows than praise.
While Rangers continue to burn through millions, proven talent slips through the cracks. It feels like mismanagement. And unless there’s a sharp pivot in policy, fans will continue to lose trust. Right now, the logic simply isn’t there. Rangers’ questionable choices in the transfer market once again arise.
