Rangers appear to be closing in on the signing of Dundee’s Josh Mulligan with multiple sources now suggesting the midfielder is undergoing a medical ahead of a move to Ibrox. The 21-year-old has been a standout for Tony Docherty’s side this season and his blend of physicality and energy has attracted attention from several clubs. However Rangers seem to have stolen a march on the competition and are moving quickly to complete the deal.
The first signs of Rangers’ interest in Mulligan emerged last month when it was revealed that scouts had been regularly watching him at Dens Park. The situation developed rapidly as Philippe Clement’s departure made space for others in the background to press ahead with certain transfer targets. Mulligan had long been identified as a rising domestic talent and one who would cost considerably less than many foreign options.
This week speculation intensified further after fresh reports confirmed Rangers had made a formal approach and were now in the process of finalising personal terms. The clearest signal yet came when Mulligan was absent from Dundee’s scheduled training session yesterday with club sources suggesting he had travelled south. A medical has reportedly taken place at the Rangers training centre and if successful he will become the first signing of the new Ibrox era post-Clement.
Salford City were also said to be keen on the Scotland youth international but were ultimately overtaken by the Glasgow giants who are now confident of wrapping things up in the coming days. Mulligan is understood to be eager to make the step up and is believed to have turned down higher wages in England in favour of joining Rangers where he sees greater opportunity to develop and compete at a higher level.
The deal is expected to be worth in the region of ÂŁ1 million and represents a significant moment for the club as they start to rebuild under the new structure. While not the biggest name fans may have hoped for Mulligan ticks a lot of boxes in terms of youth physicality attitude and domestic experience. Should his medical go through without issue he will be officially unveiled before the squad returns for pre-season later this month.
