Rangers fans fume as ‘clear penalties’ denied
BILBAO, SPAIN - APRIL 17: Barry Ferguson, Interim Manager of Rangers FC, hands a note to Hamza Igamane of Rangers FC during the UEFA Europa League 2024/25 Quarter Final Second Leg match between Athletic Club and Rangers FC at Estadio de San Mames on April 17, 2025 in Bilbao, Spain. So Barry’s Rangers exit Europe and fans today are still reeling from the two penalties that ‘should have been’.

The first one we can excuse the ref missing it in real time (most fans did too), but the lack of VAR intervention was a clear mistake or ‘suspicious’.

The second was a simple hand ball that again VAR overlooked it seemed – albeit we saw the ref did discuss it with them.

While Rangers may have been robbed of those pens, the result was fair. Ferguson’s side was second-best all night, and Bilbao were pretty much rampant, if wasteful.

And so it is that Rangers’ season is now over, we simply await this takeover (if it materialises) with baited breath and hope better is to come in the future with this club.

Problem is the 49ers aren’t just a blank cheque and we need to find a capable manager.

Rangers’ problems are very much still there, with no Euro run now to paper over the failures elsewhere.

It’s a very tough time to be a Rangers fan and bad refereeing doesn’t help – Cyriel Dessers certainly didn’t appreciate the booking!

But we’re not going to blame all this on refs. Rangers have just badly fallen short for too long especially domestically and we can only hope the potential takeover changes that.
