There is absolutely no doubt that Rangers have a sprinkling of gold dust when it comes to the Europa league.

To once again secure passage to the knockout stage, regardless of who the manager is shows that the Europa league is in the DNA of Rangers FC.

Regardless of how the team does it or how the manager sets the team up or what substitutions are made rangers always seem to get the job done at that level.

To finish eighth among that company was quite an achievement for a team that only spent £13.5 million in the window.

The problem, however, is that Rangers don’t progress beyond that last 16. Besides Seville Rangers have not gone beyond the last 16 in this competition at all.

For all our brilliance in the group or league stage of the tournament, taking that final step to actually winning the darn thing seems to be beyond us.

If however Rangers were excellent in the Champions League or on domestic front this wouldn’t be such a notable issue, but unfortunately being terrible on a domestic front and diabolical in the Champions League means that achieving modest success in the Europa league doesn’t really make up for the shortfalls elsewhere.

Rangers punch above their weight in the Europa league but it doesn’t really achieve anything. Unfortunately, the only thing it has really achieved is giving Celtic free Champions League spots.

For Rangers to excel in the Europa league means taking the big step to winning it because how long can you attain this level of competence in this competition without silverware?

This is not to be unnecessarily negative because it is a hell of an achievement in a sense to get out of this initial phase given the squad that we have.

But it really is about time that Rangers won something of real note. Perhaps that is to be this year’s Europa league.
