“Unlikely he’ll do anything different” – Spurs & Angie in trouble before Rangers

Ain’t it bleeding amazing the difference just a few games make, and having a manager who has finally realised that playing favourites will only get him the sack.

Rangers finally have brought Hagi back into the team, and he’s done exactly what I said he would do. Trickery with smarts, and creating chaos in the opposition ranks. Now he is causing so much trouble that in the Scottish Premiership he is dragging two defenders around with him, and on the tactical side, we are doing something I had long given up asking for. We finally are now playing two up front. And Dessers and his constant passing to the opponents seem to be a thing of the past.

But, now it’s the business end of the Europa League Group stage, and we are up against Spurs, a genuine Champions League level team, and Rangers in our fantastic wisdom did not include Hagi, or Danilo in our League squad. Instead we decided to fill up our remaining non-Scottish contingent with players from our under 18s. Yeh, that was smart.

So, as everyone not living under a rock knows we are up against our old nemesis Ange Postecoglou, and his tactics have not changed, and never will change.

To win, he loads the front line with three forwards and two attacking midfielders, to play a formation that at times is similar to a 2-1-2-5, which I must admit is a little bit better than the 2-1-7 he sometimes deployed while managing Celtic.

With the simple philosophy that his team will always score more goals than his opponent, Ange has found that playing an all-out attack formation against teams that know how to defend and can hit on the counter is dangerous, but honestly, because of Ange’s prior experiences against Rangers it is unlikely that he will do anything different.

At the back he will probably deploy Fraser Forster, who we all know is solid goal keeper, but his confidence is starting to take a hit with all the goals Spurs have been losing.

But for us, the most important development has been a long list of injuries to their back line, Ben Davies, Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, all appear to be carrying knocks, and it appears that Spurs are considering resting all of them for this game, to allow them time to recover.

If this does happen, they will have a so-called weakened backline, with £26 million Romanian Radu Drăgușin alongside £40m Archie Gray.

At this price point Radu Drăgușin stats are going to be scary, and yes he is very impressive. In stopping attempts to dribbles going past him he only failed once to stop a dribble in his last 15 matches that he played for Genoa in his time in Italy. He also is tall and he creates a very strong aerial threat for his team in corners. He has scored a number of goals from corners, which is another reason for Rangers to try to play the game away from our end of the park.

That said…I have noticed that Radu’s positional strength is sometimes questionable, and his overconfidence sometimes works against him. And because he has not worked as often with his teammates as the other defenders, he does make mistakes.

In midfield Pape Matar Sarr is likely to play, and he will team up with Madison and Bentancur. If we are going to win this match, we need to be quick, and though I like the skilful game, there is nothing wrong with laying down a number of heavy tackles to welcome them to Glasgow. This will encourage their midfield to pass the ball just a little bit faster, which can sometimes lead to mistakes.

Finally up front we can expect to see Son, Will Lankshear and Dejan Kulusevski, and they will give our backline a lot of trouble, especially if we allow Spurs to come forward in numbers.

So, what can we do against an English team who, unlike Nice, do operate as a team. You’ll find that out later….
