Rangers currently sit in third place in the Scottish Premiership behind Celtic and Aberdeen, and there has been a disappointing spell for the club with inconsistent performances. Clement is probably on his way out, and something needs to be done to rejuvenate the team.
This inconsistent form has made it difficult for sports bettors making acca picks, as you would usually pick Rangers as a dead cert in most SPL matches. However, even if you learn more about accumulator betting, Rangers have become the bane of many bettors’ doubles or triples, and people are generally favouring Celtic and Aberdeen.
Sports betting aside, something needs to change, and perhaps some high-profile transfers could be the answer. While we wait for changes to happen, let’s take a look at better times and Rangers’ transfer history. Below, I’ve listed the club’s top eight most expensive signings of all time – enjoy!
1. Tore André Flo – £12,000,000
- From: Chelsea
- Fee: £12 million
- Date: 23/11/2000
I forgot how expensive Tore André Flo was, but he holds the record for a Rangers top signing by some margin, at £12 million. Also, consider that at the time in 2000, £12 million was a pretty epic fee and he was the most expensive Norwegian player in the world at the time. Flo helped Rangers win the 2001-02 Scottish Cup and the 2001-02 Scottish League Cup, but never won the Premier League with them.
2. Ryan Kent – £6,500,000
- From: Liverpool
- Fee: £6.5 million
- Date: 02/09/2019
Initially, Ryan Kent joined Rangers on loan, but the club eventually signed him for the second-highest transfer fee of £6.5 million. He played from 2019-2023 and during that time he flourished as a player and won various young player awards. He also helped the club win the 2020-21 Scottish Premier League and the 2021-22 Scottish Cup. After Rangers, Kent would go on to play for Fenerbahce.
3. Michael Ball – £6,500,000
- From: Everton
- Fee: £6.5 million
- Date: 20/08/2001
Ball was signed from Everton for £6.5 million as the club were dealing with financial issues. Many will remember how he got a £10k fine for swearing at Dick Advocaat after being substituted during his first Old Firm match. His time with Rangers was also marred by contract disagreement and he is generally looked on as one of the worst high-value signings the club has made.
4. Danilo – £6,000,000
- From: Feyenoord
- Fee: £6 million
- Date: 28/07/2023
Danilo is the only active player on this list, and he has been with Rangers since 2023 when he transferred for £6 million from Feyenoord. In his first season with the club, he scored six goals across 21 appearances, although this season, he has only made one appearance and has rarely been seen on the pitch.
5. Mikel Arteta – £5,800,000
- From: Barcelona
- Fee: £5.8 million
- Date: 29/06/2002
I’d forgotten that Arteta played for Rangers, as many remember his time with Arsenal and Everton. However, he came to the club in 2002 and played for three seasons. During his 50 appearances, he scored 12 goals and was generally liked by fans and players. With the Teddy Bears, he won the Scottish Premier League and League Cup during the 2002-03 season.
6. Andrei Kanchelskis – £5,500,000
- From: Fiorentina
- Fee: £5.5 million
- Date: 15/07/1998
Kanchelskis was an incredible player during his prime, but he was getting towards the end of his career when he joined Rangers, and his time here was plagued with injury and internal issues. He didn’t have the impact that many hoped he would and scored just 13 goals across all competitions between 1998-2002.
7. Giovanni van Bronckhorst – £5,500,000
- From: Feyenoord
- Fee: £5.5 million
- Date: 06/07/1998
When I look back at the Rangers squad during the late 1990s, it certainly was stacked! Admittedly, Kanchelskis made less of an impact, but van Bronckhorst was awesome and had an enormous effect on the squad. Coming from Feyenoord, he was instrumental in Rangers winning the 1999-99 Domestic Treble. As you will know, he also had a short stint managing the club from 2021-2022.
8. Ronald de Boer – £4,500,000
- From: Barcelona
- Fee: £4.5 million
- Date: 30/08/2000
Ronald de Boer is another player I remember fondly from the 1990s and early 2000s, and he was another big signing that Rangers made. He played for the club for four years, from 2000-2004, and during that time, he helped us do the Domestic Treble in the 2002-03 season by lifting the SPL, Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup.
Will Rangers ever top the £12 million fee in the future?
With Rangers being in trouble and a Philippe Clement departure looking imminent, many are asking what can be done to improve the team’s fortunes. Perhaps a mega signing like the £12 million they paid in the past for Tore André Flo could be on the cards?
Let’s face it, third place is terrible, and we must to do better but there is a substantial gap between the Teddy Bears and our Old Firm rivals. A shakeup of the squad plus a new manager could be just what is needed to make a late season push and try and regain ground.
3rd place isnt terrible ? Never thought would hear that from this site. Nonsense.
Agreed, an error in the edit, will remove that.
