As covered earlier, Rangers manager Philippe Clement has been listed in Belgian media as a strong favourite to replace the struggling Dominico Tedesco whose Belgium reign is perilously careering off the rails.

As we mentioned, Clement is alongside four others in Thierry Henry, Hein Vanhaezebrouck, Sergio Conceicao and Hervé Renard for the position, and while he’s said he wouldn’t be leaving for any job, the national team is a rare beast few managers can turn down.

But who is Clement up against?

Well Henry is of course an Arsenal legend and himself has been assistant to former Belgium boss Roberto Martinez for the Belgian side, and most recently quit the France U21s after the Olympics.

Hein Vanhaezebrouck was the Gent manager till recently, and is now, like Clement was before Rangers, a free agent looking for his next gig, while Sergio Conceicao is also a free agent who managed Porto till June.

Lastly Hervé Renard is the Saudi Arabia manager, and he, like Clement, would cost money to free from his current gig.

Clement is the strong favourite – well-regarded in Belgium, not least by the FA’s new sports director, it would cost the FA £6M to compensate Rangers.

But Clement has to want to leave – and frankly we suspect this offer would be too much for him to want to turn down.

Where do things stand here?

If the FA makes the offer, we suspect Rangers would clutch it with both hands, and Clement would be happy to return to his homeland for the big national job.

He’s been a fail at Rangers, as he was at Monaco, and it’s clear he thrives only in his homeland with a style that fits it – that may translate to the national team too, we don’t know.

But if Rangers can get Clement off our hands before he does any more damage, while securing the £6M compensation, we’ll take that happily.
