Who would do a better Rangers job than Philippe Clement?

So as regulars may have noticed, Ibrox Noise is done with Philippe Clement and his excuses, and we’re not interested in the Happy Clappers’ dismissal of ‘just support the team and manager ffs’.

We do support our club, but we don’t any more endorse Philippe Clement who is abundantly the wrong man to go forwards with. We will support on match day, the club, and the team, and we will hope our disdain of Clement is proven wrong each time.

We don’t support or condemn him, he is just the wrong man in place right now.

So… of course, ‘who could do better’?

It’s a real problem isn’t it?

Rangers have so few truly great managers in the past 12 years, but Bears of an older vintage were used to Graeme Souness, Walter Smith, Dick Advocaat and Alex McLeish, great managers with different styles who made Rangers the best team in Scotland for their time here.

Since Walter left in 2011, we’ve had a conveyer belt of every manager under the sun, and only two of them have actually been worthy – Steven Gerrard and Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

Why?

Gerrard built a brilliant European Rangers – he took a bit long to win the title, but he did so, and Rangers would have gone on from that if only he’d been supported by the board in 2021. Unfortunately he wasn’t, and he called that out then left. But he was the closest thing Rangers have had to Walter since the great man hung up his clipboard and pen.

Giovanni is a brilliant manager if not the best man-manager, ask Niko Katic. But what he did with Gerrard’s struggling and unrefreshed squad was a miracle, getting the team to Sevilla. He was not then backed up that summer, being given random rotten players he couldn’t do anything with (Matondo, Davies, Lawrence) and alongside a diabolical injury crisis, it all crashed in 2022/23. He was fired. He is now manager of Besiktas, and they sit a healthy third having dropped only two points all season.

But this doesn’t really help, does it. We aren’t bringing these men back, and it would be someone new.

The name many suggest is Derek McInnes, who ticks a lot of boxes. We touched on this earlier, and while we aren’t going to endorse anyone, he isn’t the worst. He said no last time because he wasn’t ready, he probably is now. Worked miracles at Killie last season with no budget, but has found the going tough this time around, and can’t cope with Europe with Killie’s squad. It’s too much for them.

He is fundamentally a Rangers man, who gets our club and knows it’s must-win 24/7.

Whether this means he’s the right stuff to manage us we’re not sure. After we endorsed Beale and Clement, Ibrox Noise is keeping our thoughts to ourselves.

But we clearly need someone else – the board has got the last two wrong, but the previous two right.

But it’s a new board in place, and maybe they’d be third time lucky?

All we know for sure is Clement isn’t taking us anywhere.
