Ibrox Noise had suggested taking Vaclav Cerny out of the firing line after the Czech winger’s terrible 10 days for Rangers.

The on-loan Wolfsburg man had sunk following his horror miss in Malmo versus the Swedes, and there was a speck of acrimony over him from some fans, but Ibrox Noise regulars will know we didn’t stop backing him, even if we hinted that maybe he should be taken out of the Rangers firing line for now.

Manager Philippe Clement did not agree, and selected him once more at Ibrox v St Johnstone, and we are delighted to see that it worked out, and not only did Cerny have his best match in the shirt with two outstanding goals, but hopefully now the confidence is back too.

4 shots, two (brilliant) goals, two key passes, and aside the defence and Nico Raskin, no one came close to the possession level Cerny had.

82% passing level in his position wasn’t all that bad either, and he was taken off at 72 minutes to a warm reception.

It did get briefly shaky there with the Czech – his form was dipping, fans were groaning, and he was reacting. It didn’t get too bad thankfully, and all he needed was one good performance and the support would be back onside.

Mercifully they are.

The further bonus of last night is that while St Johnstone languish near the bottom of the table, their new boss Simo Valakari was watching on from the stands so the players were in ‘new manager bounce’ mode and eager to impress their incoming manager so Rangers and Cerny had to overcome a Saints with a bit more energy and enthusiasm than they previously had.

That Rangers’ overall display wasn’t the best (when is it ever) doesn’t matter here, that Cerny was able to shine in these circumstances does, and the £10M-rated winger did again show the talent he has.

He is clearly a confidence player, and in fairness his manager clearly believes in him, and he did repay that in Govan on Sunday. Another great couple of goals and Cerny’s season stats now read:

5 goals and assists in 11 for Rangers. It’s a good return.
