With both the Govan and Main Stands at Ibrox naturally renamed in recent years to honour two Rangers greats in Sandy Jardine and Bill Struth, fellow legend Walter Smith also has a permanent homage in the form of a statue honouring his life.
But there have also been some whispers of the potential of renaming either the Copland or Broomloan stands in honour of the great man as well, so Ibrox Noise put it to our readers to see what favour such a move actually had.
We can confirm that in the single-most overwhelming one-sided poll Ibrox Noise has ever run, 98% of around 2,000 votes believe either the Copland or Broomloan should be renamed after Walter Smith.
It’s about as unequivocal as it gets, with the legendary manager only seeing 2% of replies disagree with that course of action – about as close to 100% as we’ve ever seen, and probably ever will see.
A few comments did suggest that the statue alone suffices, given there’s been a John Greig one for years but no stand was ever renamed for him.
Usually, however, stands are named in honour of a great who has passed away, and we hope for many more years of John yet!
In Walter’s case, of course, we tragically lost him far too early, and while the statue is a fine offering in his honour, it’s clear that the vast, vast majority of Rangers supporters would add a renamed stand to the changes.
Which one? Copland or Broomloan?
Ibrox Noise’s preference personally would be Broomloan, there’s something special about Copland and its name that we’d personally like to preserve for a little longer. Just ask Andy Halliday, who of course, in case you didn’t know (!), was raised on Copland Road a literal (strong-armed) stone’s throw away from the stand itself.
But either way, fans have chosen that one of them be renamed and of course have noted that we do all still tend to call them Govan and Main Stand anyway, out of force of habit – it would be the same for this one too.
But either way, whether this is a rename that ever happens, time will of course tell.
