Rangers winger Vaclav Cerny really has had the week from hell, following his nightmare miss in Malmo – Rangers went onto win that one of course but the Czech star more or less missed an open goal.

And it’s only gotten worse for the on-loan Wolfsburg attacker.

His nightmare v Hibs at Ibrox was a further collapse, and after the poor display he put in that afternoon, the bad backpass, groan from the crowd and his angry emotional reaction to that saw him subbed with a pep talk from the manager.

But even worse was to come, as he blazed over the top in front of an open goal v Lyon, in what was effectively an impossible miss of the calibre of Alfredo Morelos, which has compounded a terrible period for him.

Opponents laughed at him, and thanked him for that miss, which ‘kicked Lyon into action’, to paraphrase one of them, and to make matters worse, we assume he’s received a lot of abuse, digs and criticism on social media and the ex-Twente man has now deleted his Instagram account.

This is a talented player, a quality player, whose confidence has absolutely crashed following that horrific miss in Sweden, and from nowhere a guy we were 100% going to sign if finances allowed, has now crumpled into a nightmare.

We still like him, on Ibrox Noise anyway – we know the fanbase at large is probably cynical of him now, and we understand that. We know you don’t play for Czechia 19 times with 9 goals and assists at that level if you’re no good.

But he couldn’t have had a worse 10 days or so. Three horror displays in a row, after such a bright start at Rangers.

The boy definitely needs to be taken out of the firing line – he began at high octane, and that one bad miss at Malmo has unravelled him completely and his confidence is spent.

And now he’s removed his social media probably on account of toxic comments aimed his way.

Cerny is not having a good time.

So what is the approach now?

We do suggest benching and using him later – rebuild the boy’s confidence, because he’s already done it for Rangers in the league and Champions League qualifiers. He clearly is capable.

But a winger is a confidence player and right now his is AWOL.

And that needs to be restored.

But Philippe Clement doesn’t have a clue how to manage Rangers so he will likely only make matters worse.

Lord knows how this one will develop.
