We have to say, the content in the press today featuring ex-Rangers striker Billy Dodds (in fairness he was not half bad for the Famous) suggesting that Cyriel Dessers is ‘struggling’ really is some of the most absurd stuff we’ve seen this morning, and we had an email in our inbox today about someone’s cat, we kid you not.

Dodds is quoted as saying:

“He came off against St Johnstone and looked pretty frustrated. For whatever reason, it’s not been happening for him these last few weeks. I’ve spoken about his mindset before, because you can go under as an Old Firm player if you’re not performing and the crowd gives you a bit of stick. Dessers, to his credit, has come back fighting before but you still need more than one guy so you’re not thinking, ‘Oh well, even if I don’t perform to my best, I’m still going to play’.”

Now, let’s look at the ‘past few weeks’:

3 assists, 2 goals in 6 Rangers appearances. That does not scream to us of a player bang out of form now does it?

Goals-wise it’s maybe a speck drier right now, but it’s still 4 in the last 8 appearances, which we’re pretty sure is one in two.

So basically Dessers, it seems, is being criticised for not scoring in every match here.

Dodds is right that he did look frustrated on being removed v the Saints, but he’d not had a vintage match that night and it was time to try something else. That’s fair enough, no single player can be amazing all the time.

We do think though this is just criticism for criticism’s sake. And even Erling Haaland gets it. If he goes a few matches without scoring it’s a crisis and he gets criticised for a form loss.

If Haaland, Mbappe, Bellingham and Vinicius Junior get this stuff, we admit Dessers isn’t exactly immune either.

Rangers’ Nigerian striker is doing fine, but we do agree with Dodds’ later assessment that having Danilo back fit (and the hopeful development and improvement of new man Hamza Igamane) in there too will push Dessers on further to keep up what has been a strong season.

5th top scorer in the SPL, and a excellent overall record this campaign.

He’s doing ok.
