We have to concede a bit of disquiet over the reaction by many Rangers fans to Czech winger Vaclav Cerny on Thursday.

Yes, it wasn’t his absolute shining hour, even if he did work hard, and yes, his miss was very bad indeed, but some Rangers supporters have now taken the chance to attack yet another player who doesn’t really deserve it by sniping at the on-loan Wolfsburg man.

Let’s remember that getting this guy was a big coup.

At Twente he nailed 43 goals and assists in 78 appearances, and at various levels for Ajax he managed 84 goals and assists in 128 appearances.

His only career ‘fail’ was 6 goals and assists in Germany with Wolfburg in 25 and he didn’t settle there, and didn’t get into a rhythm.

He has 9 goals and assists in 18 for his country.

In short, he’s an excellent winger who at 26 has had just one ‘questionable’ season, and that was far from outright poor either in Germany.

In short terms, a great CV – and he started sensationally at Ibrox too. A brilliant assist on his debut v Kyiv, a sizzling solo goal v Motherwell and an assist v Ross County and it was abundantly clear Rangers had a quality player on our hands.

A player rated around £10M who was called up (again) by his country for the last international break.

So he has one slightly off match (following a period of illness, incidentally) in which he does miss a bad chance, and fans en-masse get on their high horses with ‘I never rated him’ and ‘hasn’t impressed me’.

When asked about his two assists and sensational goal the response is ‘what else has he done?’.

Apparently goals and assists don’t count any more. Ask Cyriel Dessers who couldn’t be doing more this season and is still told by many fans he isn’t delivering.

Rangers fans SHOULD be hard to please, we couldn’t agree more. We are a demanding fanbase who shouldn’t be accepting losers.

But we should also be fair. A player who has impressed greatly, and done a lot of good things already has one ‘lesser’ night and is then immediately scrapped by the fans as a ‘dud’ is, to us at Ibrox Noise, unfair.

Cerny has just joined Rangers, he is still settling in, and we have a high quality winger on our hands who is now being more pillared for that bad miss than praised for the good he’s done.

Let’s try be a bit more consistent.
