We’re a broken record on Ibrox Noise, and we know you’ve read this story maybe a thousand times before, but the problem is it doesn’t seem to stick.
From fans whining about investment, to ‘give it time’, to every other excuse they can make about why Rangers are so bad, we on Ibrox Noise keep on harping back like that repeating vinyl to January 2007.
Paul Le Guen had just been fired, having signed dross in summer 2006, and hovering between second and third most of the season. His domestic campaign a disaster, Rangers fans roundly turned on him and Sir David Murray. It was a shambles, and culminated in Barry Ferguson being deposed as captain.
Fans were in pure rage, much like we see today.
We had no defence – Karl Svensson was in there for goodness’ sake.
January. Walter comes in. He signs 4 defenders or defensive-minded players – Davie Weir, Ugo Ehiogu, Kevin Thomson and Andy Webster, all for £2M – 3 freebies in there. Not a money issue.
INSTANTLY Rangers become the best team in the league. The second half of that season was won by a stunning 5 points, albeit obviously Celtic overall won the title with the prior lead being too long.
Is it really overly complicated to say if you sign good solid defenders you will have a spine? A team that doesn’t concede much?
Rangers conceded 10 goals that second half of the season, Celtic 17. Compare that with the 22 we leaked until then. Celtic still at 17 for that first half.
Unfortunately, it seems easier to blame the players and the board, for Philippe Clement (and many other managers’) inability to focus on the defence.
To his preference of having soft-centre full backs and ‘ball players’ in the middle playing an absurdly high line, leaking goals all over the place, rather than strong and hard-working alphas who know how to manage the rearguard.
Tactics and defence. It’s not complicated.
Celtic have nailed it, and it’s why they are more or less doing what Walter used to. They concede basically as little as that Rangers did.
We seem to refuse to do it now, and we will continue being rubbish and blaming investment, board and the players until some manager some day realises we just need a God damn defence.
We had a couple in Helander and Katic, but one was injury prone and other was sold, the Katic one annoys me to this day. What we would give for him bk.
