Rangers’ impasse with Ianis Hagi reaches fever pitch

Another B match played, yet more howls from Rangers fans for Ianis Hagi, the Romanian ‘rotting’ at the reserve side for the clash with Huddersfield.

The ex-Genk man, who never particularly shone at Rangers to justify the wage increase from £22,000pw to the contractual £30,000pw (Thanks Ross), is the quintessential example of a player getting better the less he plays.

Every other B match he appears in sees Rangers fans in rage over the fact he’s cast out from the senior side, as if Hagi could resolve everything.

This is a rare topic where Ibrox Noise’s Derek stands slightly alone on the site, with his lobbying for the attacker to play – it does in a sense make no sense to have him fade away in the reserves, especially at the wage he’s being paid, but he certainly isn’t ‘the answer’ either.

He was absolutely horrendous in Spain, his form there abysmal – a fine level of football, and he crashed and burned, and the only offers he had this summer were two from his homeland, both offering 50% of his current wage.

If Hagi couldn’t shine for a low demand side at a high level of football, is he the right stuff to shine for the high-demand pressure of must-win Rangers?

His stats? Not even as good as Ryan Kent, marginally inferior in fact, and Kent, in a similar position, was chased by the fans from the club for not being good enough.

Yet Hagi seems to be the same fans’ answer?

Rangers would have just gone with the wage rise if Clement actually believed Hagi was worth being one of Rangers’ best-paid players.

The boss clearly didn’t think that, and it means Hagi can’t play.

We agree that the situation isn’t ideal, that he shouldn’t be rotting in the reserves – he could be an option. But for that to happen Ianis Hagi would have to accept a renegotiation on his terms and accept either a wage reduction or continuation of his existing salary.

It’s abundantly clear he isn’t willing to accept.

And that means that no matter what Rangers fans are demanding, it’s an impasse with no solution.

  1. Got to admit i agree with Derek. May as well have him in the squad and pay the bit extra than play him in the B team for 22k a week anyway. We also need more numbers because of injury so we should just put him in the squad.
