As we are covering today, Rangers boss Philippe Clement carried out a major Q&A at Edmiston House on Tuesday night, and some of what the Belgian said was most definitely eye-opening.
As we’ve already illustrated, his comments about ‘timescale’ certainly raised an eyebrow, but his views on Scottish football v Belgian was even more illuminating.
Asked how he was adapting, and whether it was a challenge, he said:
“To be honest, not really. There’s not a big difference with the Belgian league. You also have a lot of teams playing with the low block and in transition towards the top teams. I think in Belgium you have more teams competing to win a title but that also has something to do with the formula they play.”
It is absolutely true that in most half-decent leagues, and those that are not, the ‘diddy’ sides will generally play the low-block v better sides to give themselves a chance of hitting on the break and nicking a goal.
But to suggest the Scottish Premiership is not much different to the Belgian league rather undermines the stark difference that taps into what he said about Ross County after the Celtic loss, that we’d won 6-0 there and that mattered.
And the point?
He still doesn’t get Rangers, or the Glasgow goldfish bowl and how it makes the Premiership arguably the most unique league in world football.
We have two teams who win the league, these days one – but two goliath teams basically (in theory) as big as any team in Europe, give or take.
But from third place down, the drop in quality, grandeur, stadium size you name it is vast, it plummets to League of Ireland or League Two in England level.
You don’t get that anywhere else – two powerhouses in one league before the rest are just completely also-rans.
However in Belgium, there are literally 6+ sides who can win the title every season, maybe more, and the competition is strong and healthy. It’s a good league which isn’t quite elite but is definitely among Europe’s second tier.
Plus to claim that he’s not had any issue adapting to Rangers/Scotland, when clearly he is completely drowning at this present moment, really isn’t a very honest comment to say.
We do wonder what he will come out with next…
Clement lies more than Beale.
