The now-closed Rangers transfer window saw a lot of upheaval, with many players exiting as well as a fair few arrivals in there too, but one player’s position has been a massive topic given how untouchable Philippe Clement has said he is.

Jack Butland has been informed, indirectly, by the manager that he is the most important player at the club, in a decision Ibrox Noise found a little disquieting – to demonstrate that one player is the most valuable and the rest are underlings. Hardly ideal for team spirit.

But it’s Butland’s own consequent interview when asked about his position that shows an uncomfortable level of ego and self importance, fuelled by Clement’s curious comments, that we find a little disquieting.

When asked if he was confident the club would reject bids for him, he said:

“Yeah, I think we have a good relationship. There is an idea of what we want to achieve and ultimately I want to be successful here. We have had conversations. My conversation with the club has been what are we doing, where are we going, how far are we going and how far are we pushing? Any player at any club, that’s what you want to know – the ambition. For me, no cloudy areas over that I am looking forward to the season and playing as well as I can.”

This is already curious – Jack Butland is announcing to the world that ‘Rangers’ ambitions better damn well match mine’, that he needs to approve of the club’s plans.

Then he adds this in terms of who he’s spoken to:

“Everybody, you get the opportunity to speak with directors on planes, pick their brains and speak to people. That is what this club is all about. You’ve got to be together and it is a concern of mine. I am not concerned but it is good to speak with those people and know where the club is at, the direction and optimism, as a player there are things you want to know and be a part of. I hope my opinion is sometimes taken and matters as well and it’s a good relationship. I really enjoy how things are going.”

Yet again, Butland announces that Rangers’ board must meet his approval, his ambitions, and that he wants to influence the club at a level well above his paygrade.

Rangers managers themselves have frequently shown respect to the board, with former boss Steven Gerrard admitting certain decisions at the time ‘were above my paygrade’.

This is not to say the board is ‘better’ than anyone else, but when was the last time that a player needed to give the board and management HIS approval? Unless you’re Messi or Ronaldo, next-to-never.

Yet a Stoke-relegated, and Palace and Man Utd failure who can’t even get down to a Kyogo grass cutter thinks he’s bigger than the club and that the club and board must meet his expectations?

We’re sure the woke and virtue signalling minority will defend this nonsense and try to preach how acceptable it is, as they always do, such is the way of a portion of our support these days to handwring and glorify anything which demeans our club, but for a guy who has won a single trophy in his career, that being only 10 months ago at Rangers, this seems an absurd level of entitlement.

We are really, really going off Jack Butland. Just who the **** does he think he is?
